We have an opening for an experienced Welding Engineer or Welding Metallurgist to work as a part of a team responsible for welding and other joining methods for actinide metals, in addition to other metals and alloys. Additional technical activities include leading the design, procurement, installation, testing, and operation of welding systems and interfacing with both design engineers of weapon system components and production agencies while participating in product realization teams and quality processes with internal and external parties. This role will require frequent domestic travel to meet project goals. This position is in the Materials and Non-Destructive Evaluation Section within the Materials Engineering Division.

These positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide moderately complex to complex welding engineering recommendations for material selection weldability, welding process selection while understanding the metallurgy of selected welding processes.
- Provide hands-on technical input to the welding of actinide metals.
- Characterize weld and weld joints and the associated processes to provide appropriate technical guidance.
- Observe and collaborate on welding operations at production facilities at other national laboratories including Y-12 in Oak Ridge TN, Los Alamos, NM and the National Security Complex in Kansas City, MO.
- Review procedures and techniques at production facilities, report findings and observations to LLNL program management.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from experiments and development activities on welding and other joining tasks. Propose new concepts and improve understanding of these materials under limited direction.
- Provide creative solutions to moderately complex to complex technical problems involving the welding and joining of alloys by reviewing scientific and technical literature and experimental techniques.
-Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Make recommendations for and analyze complex electron beam, laser and similar plasma-based welding technologies.
- Oversee complex welding, brazing, and joining of transuranic materials.

Qualifications
-Bachelors degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgy or related technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
-Comprehensive and broad experience in moderately complex to complex design, fabrication, inspection and testing of welded structures and pressure vessels including providing guidance on material and process selection.
-Proficient skills and experience with non-standard welding processes and materials including proficiency with microstructural characterization and moderately complex to complex welding evaluation techniques.
-Experience researching related scientific and technical literature and experimental techniques to aid in appropriate technical recommendations.
-Experience working in a production environment requiring safety and environmental compliance; ability to understand and abide by security requirements.
-Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary, multi-organizational team, anticipating and accommodating the evolution of programmatic direction and priorities while providing appropriate technical guidance.
-Proficient verbal and written communication skills including formal report writing to prepare, present and explain technical findings.
-Ability to travel domestically up to 40% time.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
-Advanced knowledge of complex welding technologies which may include electron beam, laser, and similar plasma-based techniques.
-Significant experience with complex welding, brazing, and joining of transuranic materials.

Desired Qualification
-Masters degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgy or related technical discipline.
-Prior experience working in a DOE production facility setting.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
