We have an opening for a web editor/writer to support the Laboratorys Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate. PLS is a vibrant organization that performs wide-ranging fundamental and applied science in support of the Laboratorys missions. The directorate has roughly 1200 employees and 5 key research areas: atmospheric, earth, and energy; biology and biotechnology; materials science; nuclear and chemical science; and physics. PLSs communications team supports all of these research areas as well as the PLS directorate office by producing a wide range of communications materials, such as websites, news articles, presentations, reports, posters, and brochuresas well as one-off projects, such as educational displays and videos. Much of your work would involve website content development and website content maintenance, though you would be expected to contribute to the full range of PLS communications activities, including fact sheet and other print content development. This position is in the Technical Information Department and will be matrixed to the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the G04.2 or G04.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties:

- Write, rewrite, and/or edit complex technical and possibly sensitive information into clear, accurate, relevant, and engaging products appropriate to the targeted audience(s), regardless of media.
- Update existing webpages requiring minor to moderate changes to content or graphics using Dreamweaver, Drupal, Liferay, and/or WordPress.
- Work with subject matter experts and managers to plan new or revised websites, including suggesting site structure and content organization; suggest and/or execute page layout for new pages or sites.
- Coordinate complex projects (regardless of media), including assembling multidisciplinary teams, creating timelines, assigning and overseeing tasks, liaising with customers and other departments, and delivering products on time and to a high degree of quality.
- Oversee all aspects of print and web-based publishing for projects of moderate scope, from concept through scheduling, writing, editing, review, production, printing and distribution, and/or web publishing; adhere to style guides and standards for communication products.
- Contribute to the evaluation and implementation of new tools, technologies, and processes; help develop metrics and process improvement methods; may represent organization on working groups or committees.
- Work effectively with LLNL staff members of all levels to support PLS and its communications needs.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.

In addition, at the G04.3 level:

- Make major commitments on large, costly, and/or difficult communication products (e.g., division-level strategy documents and new tool rollouts) and manage complex project schedules, track production costs, and coordinate the work of others.
- Define technical communications strategies, messages, audiences, and key deliverables for a variety of projects; review work of team members and provide technical guidance to less-experienced peers.
- Recommend appropriate media/display styles for content, test electronic materials on appropriate platforms and with appropriate software, and determine website hierarchy for complex, multilayered sites.

Qualifications:

- Bachelors degree in English, communications, journalism, engineering or scientific area, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in the area of technical communication.
- Experience planning, developing, organizing, and writing content effectively, in order to convey both substance and intent with accuracy across various types of communication platforms.
- Experience editing complex and/or technical subject matter.
- Experience leading communications projects and coordinating with other communications professionals.
- Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of editorial standards and technical language, usage, and style conventions.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite (especially Photoshop) software tools.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional principles, and technical communication practices and standards including experience writing or modifying HTML with Dreamweaver or similar html editor tools.
- Excellent customer service skills and advanced written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to be self-motivated and flexible, including effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

In addition, at the G04.3 level:

- Experience editing/writing experience in multiple scientific or technical areas.
- Experience leading complex multi-functional technical communication projects and teams with multiple technical groups, including establishing team commitments of cost, schedule, and quality.
- Experience collaborating with and communicating with all levels of an organization, including senior managers, to meet organizational/programmatic objectives.

Desired Qualifications:

- Experience with content management systems (particularly Drupal), CSS, and Bootstrap; knowledge of web accessibility standards, including W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Revised 508 Standards; experience conducting usability testing.
- Experience with social media and video development.
- Experience with photography and journalistic writing.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
