sPower is an established and rapidly growing renewable energy company headquartered in Salt Lake City, with offices in San Francisco, Long Beach and Richmond, VA and New York. The sPower portfolio includes utility scale solar, wind and storage projects in various stages of development ranging from greenfield origination to construction and operation. The Interconnection group is responsible for obtaining favorable interconnection and transmission service agreements for the sPower portfolio of development assets in CAISO, PJM, NYISO, SPP, MISO and other US transmission providers.

We are currently seeking an experienced transmission planner who will create transmission related strategies and provide solutions to the development team to support strategic development and deal origination efforts. The position requires a combination of technical expertise and creative problem solving. This is a leadership position within the development team and has potential to take on direct reports as needed. Candidates must be highly motivated with strong technical and analytical skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Analyze power flow results performed by both consultants and by utility/ISO counterparts. Perform queue attrition analysis and propose alternate mitigation strategies.
• Identify, direct and manage external consultants to perform power flow studies, including injection analysis, FCITC, deliverability studies, system impact studies and others as needed.
• Attend and track transmission expansion plan stakeholder meetings and lobby for projects beneficial to sPower portfolio. Provide regular updates to strategic development team on congestion findings and key transmission projects to target for greenfield efforts.
• Determine curtailment potential and locational marginal pricing (LMP) differentials resulting from transmission constraints to identify optimum project sites and determine economic risk for projects.
• Provide inputs for SCED modeling including tracking key merchant and utility transmission projects, working with interconnection team on queue tracking and monitoring, and monitoring generation retirements.
• Devises strategies for utilizing cost effective Transmission Services Agreements (TSAs), financial transmission rights (FTRs), Congestion Revenue Rights (CRR), or wheeling across balancing authorities, and to ensure energy deliveries from projects to various customers. Determine TTC and ATC across key transmission paths using OATI.
• Perform due diligence on potential M&A transactions by reviewing needed transmission upgrades and dependencies, evaluating congestion and curtailment risk and basis differential.
• Identifies and assesses opportunities for the development and construction of new transmission lines.

Requirements

Desired Skills and Experience:

• Relevant experience with generator interconnection procedure related studies and production cost modeling in PJM, NYISO and CAISO.
• Familiarity with transmission service arrangements, power markets, and dispatch protocols within applicable North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and RTO regions.
• Proven ability to manage consultants and direct reports.
• Able to communicate effectively in both commercial and technical venues on a stand-alone basis. Strong presentation skills.



Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's or Business degree desirable.
• At least five years of experience in transmission planning at ISO or electric utility. Two or more years working for a renewables focused IPP is strongly preferred.
• Proficiency in power flow software (Powerworld, GE PSLF and Siemens PSS/E).
• Expertise with production cost modeling software (PROMOD IV, GE Maps, Aurora).
• Willing and able to travel as much as 25-50% of the time
