GTRIs Cooperative Education (co-op) program offers you extensive opportunities to participate in diverse scientific and technological endeavors, use state-of-the-art equipment and rapidly improve your technical and leadership skills. The program allows you to alternate three semesters of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school.  The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) is currently seeking a Co-op Student in the Test Engineering Division (TEN) Test Systems Engineering Branch (TSEB) for the Spring of 2022.

Test Engineering Division (TEN) provides Test and Evaluation (T&E) capability for electronic warfare (EW), avionics, and radar hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) test systems. These systems provide high fidelity simulation and stimulation of real-time electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR), radio frequency (RF), and avionics environments for testing EW, avionics, and radar systems that are used to protect aircraft from the ground and airborne threats.

In TSEB, a co-op will be trained and mentored while supporting the design, coordination, and implementation of test systems engineering solutions for the T&E of electronic systems. TEN is working on internal research and has contracts with DoD sponsors for advanced technologies in these areas including open architecture radar systems, cognitive EW, test automation, closed-loop testing, electromagnetic support, electronic attack, simulation/emulation, and hardware/software modernization. This research involves the design and development of specialized hardware and software to create complex test environments using the best government and industry test standards.

This broad range of research will provide a solid foundation for the student as a future systems engineer. The student will work under the guidance of GTRI researchers performing research in one of the following areas -

  • Hardware-in-the-Loop test stations
  • Simulating engagement environments to replicate field activity

The student researcher will perform one or more of the following activities - 

  • Design of electrical and mechanical subsystems used in test stations
  • CAD modeling of systems, subsystems, and test stations
  • Fabrication and assembly of test station subsystems
  • System engineering tasks such as requirements design, test architecture and development, and performance analysis
  • Simulation environment design and data capture

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Co-op or Intern

  • Pursuing a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Must be eligible to be approved by your college/university to participate in a co-op program and register for co-op credit with your university during work terms
  • Must be able to complete at least three full-time co-op terms (alternating three terms of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school) prior to graduation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to perform research independently
  • Ability to prioritize tasks while working on multiple projects
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to perform CAD modeling (electrical or mechanical)
  • Ability to code in Python or C#
  • Strong interest in RF systems and data
  • Strong interest in electronic systems simulation

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
