We have an opening for a High-Power Microwave Test Engineer. You will oversee technical operations of our RF Photonics lab. You will work independently with limited direction, establishing scope of work, providing technical support for operation of a variety of lasers that are used in conjunction with semiconductor photoconductive switches to produce high power microwaves and RF. You will solve technical problems including debugging laser systems, high voltage pulsed power systems and RF diagnostics equipment as well as complete tasks using broadly defined parameters. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) of the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Partner with colleagues to gather requirements to plan for and complete projects requiring the utilization of moderately complex to complex lasers and semiconductor photoconductive switches in the production of high-power microwaves and RF.
- Operate fiber and solid-state lasers including commissioning and maintenance, operation and training in efforts supporting experimental research
- Develop and execute test plans for prototyped semiconductor based, high-power microwave and RF sources through completion the of projects.
- Conduct high-power microwave effects testing experiments.
- Document engineering methods and findings in informal and formal reports and presentations. Prepare supporting safety documentation
- Collaborate with other engineers, scientists and technicians to provide moderately complex to complex engineering solutions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Integrate engineering solutions for next generation high-power microwave system technologies.
- Contribute to the fulfillment of project and organizational goals, acting as the main point of contact, mentoring and leading junior staff, sharing relevant knowledge, providing formal guidance and recommendations to project leadership.

- Bachelors degree in electrical engineering, optics, applied physics, or related technologies field or the equivalent combination of education and relevant previous experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with commissioning, maintenance and operation of moderately complex to complex lasers including fiber and solid-state lasers.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with use and testing of high-powered radio frequency (RF) and/or microwaves.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience working with semiconductor devices.
- Experience working in a laboratory setting including experimental research.
- Proficient communication skills with proven ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner, both verbal and written for presentation and interaction with other technical staff members.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge in the domains of lasers, microwave RF or related fields involving integration of complex engineering solutions.
- Significant experience applying advanced technical knowledge and methodologies to guide the successful completion of technical projects, serving as the primary technical contact, mentoring and/or leading junior staff members.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain complex technical information and provide advice to management.

Desired Qualifications
- Masters degree in electrical engineering, optics, applied physics, or related technologies field or the equivalent combination of education and relevant previous experience.
- Significant knowledge of RF engineering.
- Broad experience with design principles.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
