Tenure Track Position in Engineering Physics

The Department of Physics at John Carroll University (JCU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Engineering Physics starting the Fall of 2022. Appointments at higher levels will also be considered, depending on qualifications and experience.

The Department of Physics offers multi-track Physics and Engineering Physics bachelors degree programs. JCU is seeking ABET accreditation for its Engineering Physics program, and the successful candidate will make significant contributions to this effort. The candidate will have an opportunity to design innovative engineering physics curriculum and develop research opportunities that align with their individual expertise and professional goals. Current faculty research areas include biomedical applications, materials for green energy, and atomic & molecular physics.

Teaching responsibilities will primarily involve foundational and advanced engineering courses, though an ability to teach within the traditional physics curriculum, as well as to teach courses for non-majors, will be an advantage. In addition, the successful candidate will establish a research program that can involve undergraduates, and will be expected to mentor senior capstone projects in engineering design. Space and startup funds for a research program will be provided. Questions about the department or position can be directed to Dr. Jeffrey Dyck, Chair, at jdyck@jcu.edu, and additional information can be obtained at http://jcu.edu/academics/physics.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. in an engineering field is strongly preferred. Candidates with PhDs in related disciplines will also be considered. All engineering specialties will be considered, but preference given to electrical engineering. The successful candidate will have a commitment to undergraduate education in a liberal arts environment. Developing a research program that can involve students, and mentoring advanced students in engineering design capstone projects, is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior industry experience
  • Prior teaching experience
  • An ability to teach general physics, and/or other courses in a traditional physics undergraduate curriculum
  • Experience or familiarity with ABET accreditation
  • An ability to forge connections to industry partners for student projects and internships
