Tenure-Track Faculty in the Department of Nuclear Engineering

The Ken and Mary Alice Lindquist Department of Nuclear Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions in nuclear engineering at all ranks. All areas of nuclear engineering are of interest, including nuclear materials, nuclear safety, probabilistic risk analysis, advanced reactors, nuclear fuel cycle analysis, radiochemistry, neutron science, radiation detection, policy in nuclear energy and security, nuclear security, safeguards and nonproliferation. While we are considering applicants in all of these areas, in this cycle the primary focus is on advanced reactor design, reactor physics and fuel management, nuclear security and non-proliferation, nuclear fusion, plasma science and nuclear medicine.

Nuclear at Penn State is establishing exciting initiatives helping shape the future of nuclear science and engineering for the 21st century. Nuclear at Penn State has strengths in the areas of thermal hydraulics, nuclear reactor safety and design, nuclear materials, advanced computing, nuclear security, safeguards and non-proliferation, and more recently in nuclear fusion and plasma science. Our mission is to provide residential and online programming (B.S., M.S., M.Eng., Ph.D.) that prepares undergraduate and graduate students for life-long learning and impactful careers in the public and private sectors. We promote diversity, work toward equity, and foster an inclusive environment by mentoring and providing innovative and supportive experiences designed to make nuclear engineering accessible and achievable. This is an exciting time for Nuclear at Penn State as we are shaping and innovating our nuclear science and engineering curriculum integrating elements of advanced computing, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, next-generation nuclear reactor design, policy, engineering economics, science communication, technical writing, instrumentation, and reactor operation, among others.

Nuclear at Penn State is witnessing unprecedented growth with five faculty hires in the past two years. We are opening a brand-new $2M Nuclear Innovation Commons (NIC) that features 5,000 sq ft of collaborative space including ideation rooms, flex space, undergraduate research space, a Nuclear Maker lab and a Digital Instructional Lab that will educate and train the nuclear engineering workforce of the future. Nuclear at Penn State will also have an expansion at the world renown Breazeale Nuclear Reactor in the Radiation Science and Engineering Center (RSEC) - featuring a $10M Small Angle Neutron Scattering beam line with another $10M for the beam lab and 5,000 sq ft of educational space for nuclear engineering faculty, RSEC staff, and students to collaborate in areas of neutron and nuclear science. The new SANS facility at Penn State will enable multi-disciplinary collaborations in areas from soft materials to health science. Nuclear at Penn State is also leading a new plasma science and engineering initiative establishing areas in: nuclear fusion extreme materials (e.g. magnets, liquids, alloys), plasma-material interactions, blanket technologies, plasma turbulence, advanced plasma reactors, and plasma medicine.

New emergent research activities at Penn State in advanced nuclear reactor technology include: molten salt reactors, micro reactors, safeguards by design, advanced heat transfer systems, next-generation fuel design, space nuclear, nuclear fusion, plasma science, computational materials science and advanced computing including artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Education and Experience:

Applicants should hold a doctorate in nuclear engineering or related field and have demonstrated outstanding scholarly research experience and teaching interests in nuclear engineering. Successful candidates will teach courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, develop an internationally recognized, externally-funded research program, and contribute to the operation and promotion of the department, college, university, and profession through service.

Nominations and applications will be considered until the positions are filled. Screening of applicants will begin on August 15, 2021. However, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as their complete application documents are ready. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a statement on teaching and research, a statement of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), a curriculum vitae, and the names and addresses of four professional references. Please submit these items in one pdf file electronically to job REQ_0000016294 found at https://psu.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/PSU_Academic
