The Department of Computer Science (CPSC) at the University of Calgary seeks outstanding candidates for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level.

Applicants must possess a PhD in Computer Science (or equivalent) at the time of appointment. The successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of a track record of publications in high quality journals and conferences. Successful applicants must also show a strong willingness to contribute to the department’s innovative teaching and research initiatives.

Applicants are sought in any area of Computer Science. We are particularly seeking candidates in the following areas: distributed computing, high performance computing, operating systems, software engineering, theoretical aspects of computer science, innovation in teaching and learning, data science, human-computer interaction, information visualization as well as social and ethical aspects of computer science. Yet, candidates in any other area of computer science are also encouraged to apply.

The applicant must have strong interests in multi-disciplinary approaches and also be able to work in close collaboration with other researchers at the University of Calgary. Interdisciplinarity in an applicant’s research is an asset. There will be opportunities to be engaged in the University of Calgary’s Entrepreneurial Thinking and Digital Innovation initiatives. 

The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent research program aligned with the University of Calgary’s Eyes High vision, and to provide high-quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  The candidate will actively recruit and supervise graduate students.  Peer-reviewed external funding is expected to be obtained and sustained. Industry experience is an asset. 

Recently ranked #1 among young universities in North America, the University of Calgary has significant ongoing research activities in fundamental and applied analytics. Information security, information visualization, visual analytics, human-computer interaction, and engineering of analytics applications are current strengths, leading to close interactions with experts from a wide variety of application domains. Cross-disciplinary teams are tackling big data challenges in energy, health informatics, life sciences, and other areas. Analytics and visualization have been identified as core platform by the University of Calgary, triggering investments in these and related research areas.

The hiring committee will review applications starting November 15, 2019. The position will remain open until filled.  Hiring decisions will be finalized by Spring 2020, with the successful candidate joining the University of Calgary in July 2020.
