The Technical Information Department (TID) has an opening for a Technical Writer/Editor. You will work within a framework of broad policies and procedures to write and edit a variety of highly specialized scientific and technical communication products for the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. You will be a member of the matrixed TID team in Document Services, a multidisciplinary team that produces communications products for the NIF&PS Directorate.

Essential Duties

- Provide advice and strategic planning support to the senior management team and LLNL Public Affairs office in the development of communication materials and presentations that recognize the viewpoint of stakeholders, and ensure that communications products are consistent with Laboratory and NIF&PS goals and strategies including the communications plan for the internal and external Directorate websites and social media sites.
- Provide strategic communications planning for complex projects by developing and implementing key deliverables for high-level strategic communications, managing complex project schedules, tracking production costs, and coordinating the work of others.
- Manage complex technical information communications and interface with TID management, writers/editors, graphic artists, photographers, and videographers to develop original technical content, provide writing and editing services, and/or coordinate the full spectrum of editorial and communication services (e.g., editing and writing for external reviews, stakeholder briefings, reports, news, and multimedia assets, including web-friendly content).
- Collaborate with Derivative Classifiers, Directorate Reviewers and the Office of Classification and Export Control to evaluate and determine the classification level of publications.
- Oversee all aspects of print and web-based publishing from concept through scheduling, writing, editing, review, production, printing and distribution, and/or web publishing; adhere to style guides and standards for communication products.
- Interpret complex technical information and translate into clear, accurate, relevant, and compelling products appropriate to the targeted audience(s) and into various forms of easily understandable communications.
- Represent NIF&PS at Laboratory Communicators meetings.
- Design, lead and evaluate progress on multiple simultaneous communications projects, including content and production decisions.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.


- Bachelors degree in English, communications, journalism, engineering, or a scientific area, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in the area of technical communication.
- Experience in strategic communications, as well as in planning, developing, organizing, and writing technical content effectively across various types of communication platforms
- Significant experience leading complex multi-functional technical communication projects and teams with multiple technical groups, including establishing team commitments of cost, schedule, and quality.
- Significant editing/writing experience in multiple scientific or technical areas using broad-based professional technical editing/writing skills including advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional principles, and technical communication practices and standards including having work edited and integrating editorial feedback.
- Ability to work under minimal direction with significant latitude in determining and planning activities to reach objectives.
- Ability to successfully work multiple tasks concurrently in a rapidly changing environment and attend to intense details with high consequence of error.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (particularly, PowerPoint and Word) and Adobe Creative Cloud software (Dreamweaver, Photoshop and/or Fireworks). Familiarity with website design, HTML and content management frameworks, specifically Drupal.
- Advanced problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills which significantly affect the ability of the organization to achieve its overall objectives and long-range goals.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills and experience collaborating and communicating with all levels of an organization, including senior managers, and ability to handle classified, unclassified, sensitive and confidential issues with tact, diplomacy and discretion.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- Advanced degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Engineering, or in a scientific area.
- Understanding of LLNLs primary missions of enhancing national security, ensuring the safety, security and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, and pursuing advanced scientific and technological programs to further the national interest.
- Expert in PowerPoint and other Microsoft products and highly proficient with content management frameworks such as Drupal. Highly proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud softwares, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and/or Fireworks.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
