Target Fabrication Metrology Engineer

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Livermore, CA 94550

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a talented individual to become a core member of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Target Fabrication team. Targets are precision assemblies comprised of the essential elements for experiments performed on the NIF laser and include complex manufactured components. Consequently, they raise many interesting challenges requiring a combination of mechanical engineering and metrology science to measure and analyze. Your primary role will be to define, perform, and analyze data from complex metrology operations on target components and assemblies.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Use optical coordinate measurement machines (OCMMs) to program and run complex metrology routines on target assemblies and provide crucial data for NIF laser experiments.
- Use X-ray techniques, such as radiography, tomography, or diffraction as well as optical interferometric methods to characterize unique precision components.
- Work with an interdisciplinary team to select metrology methods and define new measurement parameters and acceptance criteria for new components and assemblies, under limited direction.
- Perform moderately complex to complex engineering calculations to support metrology operations.
- Analyze data using error bar analysis and requirement verification techniques.
- Write and refine MATLAB routines to process metrology data.
- Provide technical solutions addressing moderately complex to complex problems with limited direction.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Provide guidance and direction, act as technical leader on the projects or lead metrology reviews.
- Train and mentor other engineers.
- Provide technical solutions to complex problems which may not be well defined, lead projects under minimal direction, and independently resolve technical objectives and criteria to satisfy project objectives and execute the appropriate technical approaches.
- Develop characterization techniques for measuring products against required specifications using advanced microscopy, interferometry, or X-ray imaging.
- Collaborate with technical area leaders, project leaders, and program management to represent technical capabilities and project results to internal management and external sponsors.

- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or Physics and a minimum of 2 years of related metrology experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge in dimensional and coordinate metrology and experience using an OCCM system for 3D dimensional measurements including laser probes.
- Broad experience with metrology techniques, such as interferometry, atomic force microscopy, radiography or tomography systems including reconstruction techniques.
- Comprehensive knowledge of and broad experience with putting together inspection reports on manufactured components with the ability to determine limitations in resolution and accuracy in manufacturing.
- Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge and proficiency with measurement fundamentals, including error bar analysis and requirement verifications.
- Experience working with and programming in MATLAB or demonstrated ability programming in an application.

In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience in coordinate and X-ray metrology techniques including characterization.
- Experience leading complex requirements-driven engineering activities as well as experience leading reviews; includes advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information internally and externally.
- Ability to lead independent work.

Desired Qualifications
- Masters Degree in an Engineering discipline or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Knowledge of ANSI/ASME standards for testing of machine tools or coordinate measuring machines.
- Knowledge of CNC machine tool programming and post processing (G-code M-code).

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.For additional information, please see DOE Order 472.2.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
