Systems Integration Specialist

We have an opening for a highly motivated, self-starting Systems Integration Administrator to develop, integrate, and maintain medical and ES&H instrumentation and associated software into systems that reliably acquire, analyze, and share data. You will work independently with Health Services Department (HSD) and Technical Serviced Department (TSD) staff, vendors and LLNL Computing specialists to troubleshoot computers, software, operating systems, and networks to sustain and improve existing systems and their cyber-security posture. Your time will be split between working daily with HSD personnel or TSD laboratories to ensure their computers, instrumentation and systems are on-line and functional. Longer term projects would include reengineering existing systems to modernize technologies, developing or implementing software to manipulate and/or transfer data, developing and maintaining documentation, and/or supporting deployment of new equipment purchases. This position is in the Application, Simulations and Quality (ASQ) Division within the Computing Directorate reporting 50% time to the TSD manager and 50% to the HSD Health and Wellness Services manager.

This position will be filled at the 320.1 or 320.2 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Be responsible for regular operations of laboratory instrumentation, computers, applications, and system communications.
  • Install, configure, integrate, and troubleshoot applications, operating systems, and instrument communications, primarily Windows.
  • Utilize time management and prioritization skills, regularly and proactively engage professionals from various disciplines.
  • Frequently work with various scientific disciplines to fulfill customer needs and elicit requirements. Network and collaborate with technical teams including Desktop support, CyberSecurity, and Institutional Network to ensure operation, proper integration, and maintenance of systems.
  • Create, review, and maintain advanced technical support documentation for systems and their environments.
  • Provide input and status updates for project tracking.
  • Establish collaborative solutions for network or other communication protocols for laboratory instrumentation consistent with existing Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS).
  • Serve as the technical point of contact for vendor support and evaluate vendor products as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the 320.2 Level

  • Lead system and process analysis efforts to provide innovative solutions for highly complex customer problems.
  • Design and develop advanced technical solutions, networking with LLNL computer and infrastructure teams, to recommend solutions and strategies for configuration and integration of new technologies.
  • Research, develop, and present modern, fiscally appropriate technology proposals.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of technical training and extensive experience.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following: troubleshooting instruments and instrument communication, system administration, operating systems, application development, servers, virtual/containerized environments, computer security protocols and requirements.
  • Experience installing and/or configuring software applications and operating systems
  • Ability to do complex, in-depth analysis and develop innovative methods regarding problem diagnosis and resolution with systems comprised of custom and Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) components.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with instrumentation integration with information management systems.
  • Experience and skills needed for customer support to include a focus on listening, rapport-building, clear communication, friendly and approachable nature, and courtesy and respect.

Additional Qualifications at the 320.2 Level

  • Significant experience working independently to plan and schedule workload, establish priorities, and collaborate with high-level technical personnel.
  • Significant and highly advanced experience with one or more of the following: software and/or systems configuration, computer administration, applications development, or instrumentation management and communications.
  • Experience with project planning and management, as well as presentation skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of medical instrumentation and/or health care industries.
  • Experience in developing scripts to automate tasks.
  • Experience in laboratory information management systems (LIMS), Radiology Information System and Picture Archival and Communication Systems (RIS/PACS) or environmental monitoring, as well as experience using Microsoft Teams, Confluence, and/or JIRA for project collaboration and request/issue tracking.
