Project/Unit Description

The Systems Support Engineer (SSE) is a research faculty position in the Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL), supporting sponsored research in Huntsville, AL. GTRI is looking to establish a small engineering team to support aviation activities focusing on rotorcraft. This position will support the development of avionics and sensor systems, maintenance of our rotorcraft simulator, and primarily support the Aviation Systems Division (ASD) as part of the laboratories computer support representative (CSR) team.

This team will be responsible for maintaining existing ASD IT resources primarily focusing on hardware and OS administration, managing the ASD Blackhawk simulator, and configuring new hardware for future projects.

Job Purpose

Systems Engineers lead technical teams through systems definition and requirements engineering, design synthesis, and systems analysis and the design, implementation, operation and technical management of systems projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct top-down functional analysis and translate requirements into detailed performance design criteria.
  • Design and build templates to assist SMEs in providing critical system information.
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of low complexity.
  • Define/refine internal and external interfaces.
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support setup and maintenance of the ASD Blackhawk helicopter simulator.
  • Support system integration, software development projects, and model-based system engineering projects for the Department of Defense (DoD).
  • Use system specifications and interface descriptions for integration into aircraft systems.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Presagis HeliCraft Blackhawk simulator.
  • Manage and document system configurations.
  • Perform Linux and Microsoft Windows system administration, including installing, configuring, monitoring, managing and maintaining physical and virtual servers.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve problems through research with minimal supervision.
  • Provide leadership status updates and provide cross-training to other SSE/CSR team members.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain Secret clearance.
  • Experience supporting Linux or Windows system administration.
  • Experience designing and/or maintaining computing, storage, and network hardware.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret clearance.
  • DoD 8570 certification.
  • Experience with military avionics and sensor networks, including 1553, Ethernet, and RS-232.
  • Experience with system engineering tools (MagicDraw, Cameo, etc) and configuration/requirements management systems (DOORS, JIRA, etc).
  • Ability to read, modify, and create interface control documents and schematics.

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
