Job Purpose

Systems Engineers lead technical teams through systems definition and requirements engineering, design synthesis, and systems analysis and the design, implementation, operation and technical management of systems projects.

Project/Unit Description

The Systems Engineer in the Electronic Systems Laboratory Patuxent River Field Office supports the planning, testing, execution and completion of large-scale, technically complex projects for Department of Defense (DoD) aircraft improvement programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct sponsor engagement and facilitate product or system requirements gathering and analysis.
  • Verify systems engineering product life-cycle including definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis and implementation.
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of moderate complexity. Define/refine internal and external interfaces.
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.
  • Analyze product or system functionality as defined by requirements.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Lead small to mid-sized technical tasks and/or teams
  • Coordinate a cross-functional team to develop technical solutions for our DoD sponsors ensuring all products meet allocated requirements and design
  • Ensure that all technical work is performed and documented to appropriate professional standards.
  • Consult with end-users primarily from government or industry analyzing needs and requirements
  • Develop project schedules and work assignments
  • Direct project execution through continual coordination of planning, tasking, performance reporting, change control, and issue management
  • Conduct project reviews to ensure compliance and conformance to quality standards
  • Provide assistance with hardware and software acquisition processes
  • Integrate and test system products in laboratory and field settings
  • Analyze flight and laboratory data to determine if system requirements and project objectives are met; isolate anomalies to hardware and software components
  • Integrate new technologies, develop quantitative feasibility analyses, and recommend solutions toward increasing system effectiveness
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications

Experience with complex military systems development
Experience facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders
Experience creating and delivering presentations to stakeholders and sponsors
Experience managing projects and programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DoD SECRET clearance
  • Experience with the DoD Acquisition process
  • Experience working with and/or supporting NAVAIR and/or Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) to include programs, organizational structure and contracting
  • Experience technically leading multi-disciplined (System Engineers, Software Engineers, Test Engineer) project teams
  • Experience with manned and unmanned aerial vehicles and systems
  • Experience with autonomous systems and related software algorithms
  • Experience using Model-Based System Engineering (SysML) to design systems
  • Experience working in a full-lifecycle agile and/or digital engineering environment
  • Experience supporting field tests to troubleshoot and solve problems.

  • 0 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Business Administration, Military Science/Studies, Strategic Studies, National Security or related degree

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
