Project/Unit Description

The Systems Engineer will combine experience and expertise in developing complex systems in a systems engineering role with a passion for working with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to build innovative and impactful solutions. This position is in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) at GTRI. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of EW, command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring and other applications.

Job Purpose

Systems Engineers lead technical teams through systems definition and requirements engineering, design synthesis, and systems analysis and the design, implementation, operation and technical management of systems projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create product or system definitions and conduct initial requirements analysis.
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.
  • Analyze product or system functionality as defined by requirements.
  • Interface with and learn how to work with disparate engineering teams for technical tasking.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support development of system requirements and designs for a diverse set of military systems
  • Work with other engineering disciplines to develop trade studies, product concepts and designs
  • Draft, update and maintain design documents, interface documents, and requirements
  • Perform system-level modeling, simulation, and analysis to evaluate system designs against requirements
  • Support development of systems across the full spectrum of the development life cycle
  • Combine technical knowledge with the ability to think outside-of-the-box to develop novel solutions
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and systems to include keeping up-to-date on industry standards and road maps for current and future technology updates
  • Participate in technical meetings with GTRI and sponsor personnel
  • Develop technical papers for conferences and present briefings to customers and potential customers
  • Mentor junior engineering team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in design, assessment or operation of military, avionics and/or similarly complex high-reliability systems
  • Experience with requirements development and traceability through all system development phases

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Experience with avionics or other electronic systems used in Department of Defense (DOD) systems
  • Experience in Electronic Support (ES)/Electronic Attack (EA) domains including ground and airborne radar and missile systems, stand-off/escort/self-protect radar countermeasures, and/or communications EW
  • Experience with system architectures and system hardware design
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS
  • Experience participating on Agile development teams
  • Experience facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders

  • 2 years of related experience with a Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other Engineering or Science related disciplines.
  • 0 years of related experience with a Bachelor's and Masters degree in one or both of the following disciplines: Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other Engineering or Science related disciplines.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
