Job Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking experienced Aviation System Engineers who have an interest in intellectually challenging and rewarding work. ASL is located in Huntsville, Alabama, and conducts world-class applied research in avionics modeling, simulation, analysis, testing, evaluation, and software development in support of the government sponsors. These positions reside in the Huntsville Research Center and support research and development activities for the Program Executive Office (PEO) Aviation.

The SysML Intermediate Modeler is a research faculty position in the Aviation Systems Division (ASD) of Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) supporting the Program Executive Office (PEO) Aviation sponsored research in Huntsville, AL. This position will support modeling of safety-critical avionics and aircraft architectures that meet DO-178C airworthiness and security requirements in a variety of Army efforts, including Future Vertical Lift, Degraded Visual Environment, and the Improved Data Modem.

Job Duties:

  • Support system integration and software development projects for the Department of Defense aircraft system improvement programs.
  • Coordinate system development tasks to include design, integration, and formal testing.
  • Use system specifications and interface descriptions for integration into an aircraft system of systems.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for system architectural framework, methods, and tools.
  • Ensure that technical work is performed to appropriate professional standards and that technical requirements are met.
  • Develop innovative solutions to meet system requirements.
  • Manage and document system configurations.
  • Manage reports of system deficiencies.
  • Create and investigate software change requests.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related avionics or aviation field.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related avionics or aviation field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related avionics or aviation field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related avionics or aviation field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience performing modeling tasks with SysML
  • Experience with a modeling tool (e.g., Rhapsody, Enterprise Architect, or Cameo System Architecture)
  • Experience with aircraft, missile systems, and/or spacecraft
  • Experience with avionics systems and mission-critical computer hardware and software
  • Strong coordination, organization, teaming, and communication abilities
  • Works well individually or in a group setting
  • Successfully presents technical information

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of modeling experience
  • Cameo System Architecture or MagicDraw experience
  • Masters in Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
  • Experience with military avionics and sensor networks including 1553 data bus, ARINC-429, Ethernet, and serial interfaces
  • Experience with aviation airworthiness standards including MIL-STD-882, AR385-10, and DO-178
  • Knowledge of or experience with open system architecture such as FACE, HOST, MOSA, and SOSA
  • Experience with system engineering tools (such as SysML, Magic Draw, E.A., etc.) and configuration/requirements management systems (such as DOORS, JIRA, MKS, or ClearCase)
  • Familiarity using scripting languages for data analysis (Perl or Ruby or VBS)
  • Effectively work in small teams of GTRI and government members.
  • An active security clearance is preferred.
  • Experience with defense programs including DoD Instruction 5000.2 acquisition programs
