The panel process and optics (PPO) team crafts and develops groundbreaking display technologies to support Apple's extraordinary product line. We are looking for a skilled chemist with a proven track record for the design, synthesis and formulation of functional materials. Specifically, hands-on experience and an extensive background in the synthesis of small organic molecules and polymers is required. In addition, the incumbent should have experience in the design of experiments for the synthesized compounds to optimize the physical performances of the photo-curable formulations. A successful candidate will work with a multi-functional team and external vendors to validate the developed materials towards the Critical-to-Quality (CTQ) targets for product development.

Key Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in organic synthesis, photo-curable formulation, and material characterization in a R&D, manufacturing or similar environment
  • In-depth knowledge of the structure-processing-property relationships in small molecules & polymers
  • Strong analytical skills and familiarity with statistical analysis, DOE, and root cause analysis for material QC, development, and integration
  • Experience in new product development, technology transfer, and scale-up/manufacturing through collaboration with internal multi-functional teams and external vendors is a plus
  • Familiarity with the use of Design for Manufacturing and Six Sigma techniques for liquid formulation manufacturing is a plus
  • Familiarity with TSCA registration of new materials and vendor environmental responsibility is a plus
  • Demonstrate a data-driven approach to problem solving using data analysis tools such as JMP, Minitab, Matlab or similar is a plus
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent multi-tasking and time management skills
  • Proven teamwork and leadership skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel

Description
- Design, synthesize and characterize novel photo-active compounds including, but not limited to, monomers, initiators and other polymerizable materials to deliver functional materials of desired specification
- Conduct formulation design of experiments (DOE) to optimize the physical properties of the synthesized photo-curable materials towards the Critical-to-Quality (CTQ) targets
- Collaborate with the multi-functional teams to validate the performances and develop the process for the new materials to meet the product requirements
- Lead efforts in failure analysis of both materials and component level issues and develop/validate effective solutions
- Support material QC spec definition, analytical method development, and scale-up through close collaboration with internal multi-functional teams and external vendors beyond initial proof of concept
- Transfer synthesis and process findings and specifications to manufacturing partners through effective communication, training, and documentation

Education & Experience

Ph.D. (or M.S. with 5+ years of experience) in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, polymer science, materials science or related field

Synthetic/Formulation Chemist starts at a minimum annual salary of $91,800. The actual pay may be higher depending on your skills, qualifications, and experience. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary bonuses or commission payments as well as relocation.
