We are seeking an electrical engineer to provide engineering design solutions for new construction, upgrades to facility electrical systems, and modifications to conventional office and laboratory facilities. You will apply advanced technical knowledge in electrical engineering to develop conceptual ideas into workable and cost-effective solutions that maintain facilities supporting research and investigations of nuclear materials. This position is in the Nuclear Operations Directorate matrixed to the Superblock Projects Engineering group.

This position will be filled at either the TSS.3 or TSS.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Prepare and implement complex electrical designs utilizing design criteria, calculations, schematics, red-line sketches, construction documents, procedures, and specifications.
- Utilize advanced technical engineering skills to develop detailed designs, drawings, calculations, bills of materials, presentations, and work planning documentation to support facility improvement projects including evaluating system capacities, planning sequencing of work, and ensuring constructability.
- Determine functional electrical requirements for new or modified specialized equipment and support systems and perform advanced electrical engineering calculations for short-circuit analysis of facility power distribution systems and arc flash safety analysis as needed.
- Provide engineering support during construction performed by outside contractors including reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to contractor questions, evaluating change order requests, resolving field problems.
- Lead complex internal electrical projects with responsibility for the development and compliance with technical criteria, schedules, and deliverables, and direct the work of electrical designers and drafters preparing drawings prepared in AutoCAD for projects.
- Participate in design reviews to obtain approvals of project scope and designs.
- Provide technical input to others on complex design requirements and identify and evaluate potential system impacts for projects affecting facility systems while complying with LLNL procedures, work control system processes, and DOE requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition at the TSS.4 Level
- Lead highly complex internal multi-disciplinary engineering projects as the Project Lead or Design Manager with overall responsibility for developing technical criteria, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.

- Bachelors Degree in electrical engineering or equivalent combination of education and related technical experience.
- Advanced knowledge of electrical engineering standards and practices.
- Significant experience in design work with the application of electrical power distribution system components such as transformers, switchgear, motor control centers, automatic transfer switches, uninterrupted power sources, backup generators, and grounding systems with experience preparing load studies, branch circuit and short-circuit analysis, and arc flash calculations.
- Advanced knowledge of and significant experience developing electrical project scope, evaluating design options, determining design criteria and preparing and reviewing design and construction specifications, calculations, and drawings that support efficient and successful job completion.
- Advanced knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70 and National and California Electrical Codes, electrical safety standards such as Underwriters Laboratories and International Electrical Testing Association, and significant experience with electrical safety issues associated with NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace., etc.
- Significant experience generating correspondence, reports, calculations, and presentations using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other applicable software.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively interact and collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical or operational information and provide advice to management, reviewers, and stakeholders.
In addition at the TSS.4 Level
- Substantial experience and subject matter expertise in facility electrical engineering and industry code compliance.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise senior management, reviewers, and stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications
- Professional Engineering Registration in Electrical Engineering in California or reciprocity from another state within twelve months.
- Significant experience performing design work for electrical power distribution systems in an architectural engineering (AE) consulting environment.
- Knowledge of high voltage utility systems.
- Experience with control systems and infrastructure for building automation systems and the ability to read and develop control system schematics and wiring diagrams.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
