Job Description

GTRI’s Cooperative Education (“co-op”) program offers you extensive opportunities to participate in diverse scientific and technological endeavors, use state-of-the-art equipment and rapidly improve your technical and leadership skills. The program allows you to alternate three semesters of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school.

Opportunities are available for co-op students to support various research efforts including (a) nanoparticle preparation and characterization for wastewater treatment and phosphorus recycling; (b) metabolism studies in plants and bacteria; (c) sensor development for chemical and biological detection. Duties may include:

  • Preparing solutions based on stoichiometric calculation
  • Synthesis of functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and purification the resultant magnetic nanoparticles
  • Characterization of the composition and properties of materials
  • Examination of the performance on phosphorus removal,
  • Experimental design, review, and execution
  • Reporting and analysis of data

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Biology, or related field
  • 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Must be eligible to be approved by your college/university to participate in a co-op program and register for co-op credit with your university during work terms
  • Must be able to complete at least three full-time co-op terms (alternating three terms of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school) prior to graduation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in wet chemistry techniques
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills, accountability, strategic thinking and planning, software development, debugging, working in teams, attention to detail, customer service focused
  • Strong technical skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
