Purpose

The Electric Drives Research (EDR) Group at ORNL is seeking an internationally recognized full-time electric motors researcher to conduct research, contribute in developing new research areas, and lead projects in the areas of high voltage electric motors as applied to electrified transportation. The EDR group supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Program as well as other customers in the development of advanced electric traction drives for automotive applications. The successful candidate will be capable of developing innovative motor concepts as well as performing and providing technical guidance to support the Vehicle Technologies Program goals.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

  • Conduct and lead pioneering research in the field of electric motors and electric drive technologies.
  • Explore novel materials, technologies, and thermal management techniques to enable compact or integrated electric motor/drive systems.
  • Develop and expand existing light-duty electric vehicles related research portfolio to encompass medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification by writing and submitting strong research proposals.
  • Initiate R&D to accelerate electrification of transportation systems beyond road vehicles such as marine or aerospace systems. 
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other organizations including original equipment manufacturers, universities, automotive suppliers, and other relevant research laboratories.
  • Be versant in various modeling and simulation programs as well as electromagnetic FEA programs.
  • Lead and manage technical projects in the expansion of R&D in Electric Machinery Research while striving to work with and involve other areas of expertise within the laboratory.
  • Have excellent oral and written skills to present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at national and international technical society meetings such as IEEE, SAE and others.
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, the industry, and the utilities.
  • Prepare new proposals to the internal and external funding agencies.
  • Develop research proposals that solicit new and ongoing work in the electrical machinery and traction drive research program.
  • Publish original work in technical reports, peer reviewed journals, and professional society magazines.
  • Mentor junior staff and students in the area of electrical motors technology

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering with a focus on electric motor design or research, and at least 10 years of associated work experience.
  • Demonstrated capability of conducting and disseminating original and impactful research, leading, and managing R&D projects.
  • A strong commitment to promoting positive work environment and scientific integrity.
  • Some travel will be required for this position. No clearance requirement. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Strong people skills to support team building and leadership.
  • Knowledge of CAD, FEA and system design modeling and simulation software tools is desired.
