Job Summary:
The Electrical Product Team (EPT) provides engineering design, integration and production to Missile, core radar, sonar, torpedo, and combat system competencies including power systems, torpedo and sonar electronics, receivers and exciters, antennas, control actuation system and microwave sub-assemblies.

The Advanced Electrical Products Department (AEP) within the Electrical Product Team (EPT) is responsible for design engineering including the following areas:

Hardware Engineering
Digital Subsystems Integration and Test
Component, ECAD, Proto Development
Guidance FPGA Products
System Power and Analog Controls

As part of the AEP Departments FPGA design team, engineers are responsible for the architecture, design, and documentation of deliverable firmware and FPGA embedded processing at RMD.

We are looking for Electrical Engineers with expertise in VHDL coding and FPGA-based systems.

In this role, you will develop FPGA designs for all major vendors and device families including: Xilinx, Intel (formerly Altera), Lattice, and Microsemi. Designs are implemented using VHDL for the following applications: gigabit serial interfaces, Radio Frequency (RF) and Electro-Optical (EO) DSP, controls, data links, embedded processing and processor interfaces. Designers work with circuit card designers and systems engineers to develop requirements, architect new parts, collaborative modeling of algorithms, partition and perform code development, simulation, and place and route. Designs are verified against requirements using both directed test and constrained random methodologies. Design support is expected from requirements definition through integration and test. Design documentation and configuration management are required.

Responsibilities to Anticipate:
  • Help drive projects and execute to program schedules on time and budget
  • May lead teams and mentor junior engineers
  • Demonstrate self-motivation, self-reliance, with little supervision required
  • Design and deliver production quality FPGA releases from initial proof of concept up to production
  • Work with systems, hardware, software engineers, and program management to ensure product success
  • Demonstrate the ability to architect FPGA-based systems to determine parts, interfaces, and Concept of Operations (CONOPS)
  • Translate system level requirements into FPGA requirements
  • Design and code in VHDL for reliability and maintainability
  • Verify designs utilizing self-checking techniques with directed and constrained random tests, while tracking functional and code coverage
  • Create complete documentation including requirements, verification plan, and users guides
  • Support and/or lead internal and external technical reviews
Up to 10% travel may be required in order to interact with internal/external customers and leadership team members.

Qualifications You Must Have:
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer or Electrical Engineering. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for three additional years of experience.
  • A minimum of 8 years of engineering experience
  • Experience with digital design and VHDL coding
  • Experience in Xilinx, Intel or Microsemi devices and flow tools
  • Experience in delivering FPGA solutions to system level applications
  • Hands-on experience with integration and debug
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Value:
  • Experience in Xilinx Programmable Devices (MPSOC, RFSOC, Ultrascale+) or Intel programmable devices (Arria 10 or Stratix 10)
  • Experience using VHDL simulation tools such as Questasim
  • Experience using FPGA synthesis, place & route, and timing closure tools including Synplify, Xilinx Vivado, and Intel Quartus Pro
  • Proficiency in Linux
  • Working knowledge of C/C++ and/or in computer scripting language such as Shell/Perl/Python a plus
  • FPGA design experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Radar processing techniques
    • Image processing techniques for visual and infrared sensors
    • Embedded systems design using ARM, Microblaze, or Nios processors
    • Common computer hardware interface and data protocols such as RS-422, USB, PCIe, etc.
    • Gigabit serial interfaces and multi-gigabit transceivers (MGTs)
    • Constrained random verification in UVM using System Verilog
    • Verification utilizing emulation platforms, such as Veloce
