The Whole Life Engineering Directorate (WLE) is responsible for ensuring our products are Safe, Reliable, Maintainable, and delivered on time. WLE consists of multiple disciplines that support engineering, our program offices and our customers. Our WLE disciplines participate in the total life cycle of our products from conception to deactivation. Our focus area is product support, which includes the following disciplines, reliability, system safety and supportability.

The Ordnance Assessment Program is seeking a Sr Ordinance Assessment Engineer, located in Tucson AZ.

Minimal travel required for offsite testing of energetics and working group meetings with our customers.

The candidate will perform Surveillance/Ordnance Assessment (OA) engineering activities to support a missile program.

The Ordnance Assessment Program is a combined surveillance and shelf life assessment program that assists our customers in inventory management decisions. Program activities include: performing missile-level accelerated aging (environmental exposure), executing missile and lower level teardown inspections, writing energetic item accelerated aging and test plans, coordinating accelerated aging and testing of energetic and mechanical components at the manufacturers facilities or other designated test facilities, writing final assessment reports and presenting results at Customer reviews.

The OA Program provides a continuing assessment of the effects of operational environments on the products safety, quality, performance, reliability and service life status. Surveillance tests are used to assess the effects of long-term storage; identify and establish controls for items that are calendar age, operating time, or cycle-time sensitive; ascertain aging or environmentally induced trends, service/shelf life limits and other criteria affecting life cycle reliability and operational readiness.

The candidate will work with our Customers, various commercial and government test facilities, Raytheon Missile Systems (RMS) test integrated product teams (IPTs), many engineering and support organizations including, but not limited to: Energetics and Propulsion, Materials and Process Engineering (M&PE), Mechanical, Electrical, Safety, Reliability, Quality, and Supply Chain to execute this program.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Work independently and collaborate with other engineers and scientists to evaluate product service/shelf life limitations related to degradation in performance, safety and reliability.
  • Working with and providing oversight of surveillance activities in place at several commercial test facilities.
  • Present program status to large audiences at Program and Technical reviews.
  • Engineering analysis, oversight of test & evaluation, generation of test plans, test reports, and the reduction of test data for use in making service/shelf life predictions in support of contract deliverables.
  • Work with various disciplines to identify methods and processes to uncover service/shelf life limitation in all aspects of product design.
  • Surveillance activities include various types of environmental tests, component level functional testing and the breakdown, test and critical analysis of individual components.
U.S. Citizenship status is required, as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date

Required Skills, Education, and Experience:
  • US Citizenship
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Systems, Mechanical, or Chemical, or Electrical Engineering (masters preferred) and four years related experience.
  • 6 years experience in statistics.
  • Have experience with statistical analysis techniques
  • Be capable of executing/applying root cause analysis at a system level
  • Understanding of environmental effects on hardware and application of technical theories and concepts in relation to the operation of aging components and materials
  • Working knowledge of mechanical components, materials selection and characterization, testing and hardware integration.
  • Working knowledge of component failure modes, component reliability, MIL specs and standards.
Desired Skills, Education, and Experience:
  • Active DoD clearance
  • Masters degree in aforementioned disciplines. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work with and take directions from IPT and Functional Management.
  • Strong Technical Writing skills
  • Excellent presentation skills with ability and confidence to present in front of large customer audiences.
  • Possess project management skills Ability to execute to project plans, schedules, budgets, resource requirements, and performance standards
  • Ability to effectively multi-task.
  • Ability to take an analytical approach and utilize technical knowledge to solve challenges
This position requires either a U.S. Person or a Non-U.S. Person who is eligible to obtain any required Export Authorization.

This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Non-US citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance. The Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process.
