Job Summary:
The Materials Engineering department is seeking a Metallurgist to work in the Materials and Mechanical Analysis and Test laboratory at our Tucson, AZ facility. Materials Engineering charter is to leverage material and process expertise throughout Raytheon Missile & Defense. We are committed to excellence supporting our customers and allies worldwide.


Responsibilities to Anticipate:

You will be responsible for metallurgical analyses supporting all phases of product life cycle (including design, development and production) for a multitude of programs. The analyses will cover a wide range of topics from material characterization, process issues and failure analysis for ferrous and nonferrous metals. You will work directly with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Operations Engineering, government customers and subcontracting suppliers from design concept through production stages to ensure that the design is optimized with respect to material selection. Candidate will ensure design is in compliance with Materials Engineering aspects of Military and industry specifications and standards related to Materials and processes. The candidate will develop technical solutions to complex problems that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.

The position requires the ability to work on several analyses in parallel. To work with members of the other sections in the department with areas of expertise in materials and chemistry. This involves teaming with them to support your analysis and to support theirs in turn. The position also requires working with Component Engineers, Program Chief Engineers, and Failure Investigation Teams / Failure Review Boards (FIT / FRB). This may also require periodic presentations to these entities or even Program / Raytheon Missile Systems management. This position requires periodic travel


This position can be Salary Grade G08 (Senior Multi-Disciplined Engineer I- Metallurgist) or Salary Grade G09 (Sr. Multi-Disciplined Engineer II - Metallurgist) based upon the applicants qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements of the position.


An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for additional years of experience as follows: Masters is equal to 2 years of experience or a Ph.D. is equal to 4 years of experience.


Qualifications You Must Have:
  • Bachelors in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)
  • For, Sr. Metallurgist Engineer I - Four (4) years of experience in an engineering / manufacturing technology environment.
  • For, Sr. Metallurgist Engineer II- Six (6) years of experience in experience in an engineering / manufacturing technology environment.
  • Experience with Refractory Metals and/or processes
  • Bachelors Degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering or Related Science or Engineering field
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Qualifications We Value:
  • 8 plus years of direct related metallurgy experience
  • Knowledge of Earned Value Management System is highly desired.
  • Understanding of metalworking processes
  • Fractography experience
  • Understanding heat treating
  • Understand and perform corrosion analyses
  • Familiar with the principles of welding
  • Understanding of engineering alloys
  • Possess knowledge in Materials Engineering aspects of Military, government and industry specifications and standards related to Materials and processes.
  • Possess capabilities demonstrating a willingness to provide coaching and enhancement of team play.
  • Excellent technical writing skills for reports and specifications using MS Word and Excel; good platforms skills using PowerPoint for presentations.
  • Raytheon Six Sigma certification desired but not required.
  • Data collection and presentation skills to write a cogent report, supporting the analysis conclusion and if necessary present the data and findings
  • Ability to effectively work parallel analyses
  • Familiarity with component data sheets and drawings
  • Advanced degree in aforementioned disciplines. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
