We have an opening for a Mechanical and/or Electro-Mechanical Designer to support new and on-going projects and facilities for various programs at LLNLs Site 200 and Site 300 (Tracy, CA). You will provide design and drafting support including electronic and mechanical design, drawing and data management of complex control/diagnostic systems and sub systems in support of the Laboratorys Alarms Life Safety Systems (ALSS) program. This position is in the Emergency Management Department, Alarms Division. Essential Duties- Provide advanced technical engineering design expertise and knowledge to design a wide variety of complex fire alarm systems, emergency voice paging systems, and refrigerant monitors, including development of conceptual designs, estimates, and equipment specifications.- Provide advanced mechanical or electro-mechanical design and drafting support utilizing knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) tools where overall design parameters and specifications have been established.- Estimate scheduling and costs to determine effective methods in design, materials, and time to meet project deliverables and prepare and present technical material for design reviews, procedures, and other related documentation.- Maintain and update current and new complex facility system drawings and as-built documentation. - Process drawings and other technical information using database management software.- Contribute to complex preliminary design concepts for hardware, componentry, and systems including making independent judgment and decisions.- Effectively collaborate with all levels of personnel internal and external to the Laboratory, including engineers, customers and clients, program and facility managers, construction supervisors, technicians, and senior management.- Ensure all assignments and operations are performed in accordance with ES&H, security, quality standards, Life Safety Codes and Standards, Department of Energy regulatory compliance, and Laboratory business practice policies and procedures.- Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications- Associate degree in electronics, mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, computer engineering, electro-optic technology, or other related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. - Advanced knowledge of ASME Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standard and proficient use of CAD software.- Advanced knowledge of engineering hardware design principles, fabrication, and installation processes.- Significant experience with and ability to read and interpret fire and emergency voice alarm systems and related alarm sub-system blueprints, electronic schematics, laying out diagrams and schematics, specifications, software and system program operation product manuals.- Advanced understanding of electrical and mechanical design principles and proven ability to solve complex technical problems.- Proficient verbal and written communication skills, including interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively, foster strong working relationships in a diverse multi-functional work environment, present highly complex technical information, and advise program and senior management.- Advanced knowledge of printed circuit board designs, electrical schematics, engineering hardware design, fabrication, assembly techniques, materials, testing processes, and manufacturing methods.- Working knowledge of NFPA 72 Fire Alarm Code and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.

Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).
