UW Medicines IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a Sr. Epic Research Applications Analyst! This position is currently 100% remote due to COVID-19. When restrictions are lifted and staff can return to the workplace, there is a high likelihood of partial ongoing remote work in the future.

UW Medicines Information Technology Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine.  UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake Campus (UWMC-Montlake), UW Medical Center-Northwest Campus (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of Medicine (SOM) and Airlift Northwest (ALNW).  In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Childrens University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research and Seattle Childrens).  ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission.

In collaboration with UW Medicine IT Services (ITS) and under the general guidance of the Manager, Research IT Applications, the primary focus of the Senior Epic Research Applications Analyst (Sr. Epic Analyst) position is to support multidisciplinary research teams in the specification and implementation of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in support of UW Medicine Research IT.  The Sr. Epic Analyst also contributes growing technical expertise in Epic applications and closely collaborates with other Epic Applications Team members, Clinical Informaticists and internal UW Medicine customers to provide a service oriented, cross-functional subject matter and technical knowledge for application tools and workflows in this domain.

Primary areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
  • Interacting with customers and performing a detailed requirements analysis;
  • Analyzing work process flows and technical solutions to bridge the gap between current and future states;
  • Designing, building, testing and implementing of enhancements to meet requirements;
  • Collaborating and coordinating with other application teams (clinical and non-clinical) on research related build;
  • Supporting research needs and cross-over with Clinical Trial Management System;
  • Building, developing and supporting interfaces/bridges/billing;
  • Providing production support and ongoing system troubleshooting, maintenance, monitoring, and training; and
  • Participating in projects, processes, and documentation to support customer needs.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Health Information Systems, Math, Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Possesses two or more current Epic certification OR has had Epic proficiency for 4+ years in relevant functional/business area, preferably Core Clinical, Research (clinical or billing), Beacon, Hospital Billing/Professional Billing, a clinical module, and/or a patient access module. If not currently certified or if certification has lapsed, certification must be achieved within 6 months of start date in position.

  • 4+ years year(s) of recent healthcare or IT experience, including:
  • 2+ year(s) of experience providing EHR systems application maintenance/support.
  • 2+ year(s) of experience with application/system configuration and implementation of clinical information systems (and/or healthcare applications)
  • Demonstrates a strong customer oriented mindset,  with experience building relationships, setting expectations, and collaborating across groups to ensure customers receive top quality service.
  • Experience with clinical research - particularly utilizing Epic and/or OnCore CTMS. 
  • Experience participating in defining customer requirements, translating them into design specifications.
  • Familiarity with database structures, data definitions, and data relationships.
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycle.
  • Recent experience with formal project management methods.
  • Experience significantly contributing to multidisciplinary work groups in an application development or support setting.
  • Experience independently outlining work plans and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience executing test plans and test cases.
  • Experience supporting small scale enterprise customers, both internal and external.
  • Experience walking clients through the use of systems, preferably in a healthcare environment.
  • Experience assisting team members and sharing knowledge, with exposure to mentoring others.
  • Proficiency with desktop computers with expertise in Excel, Visio, and other MS applications.


  • Previous experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.
  • Advanced degree (e.g., Masters, Doctorate, etc.).
  • Experience with one or more of the following Epic Modules: Oncology (Beacon) and Research certification (billing, clinical, or reporting).
  • An understanding of departmental/clinical operations, workflow, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience with operational workflow design of clinical software.
  • Experience of continual quality improvement (QI) and implementing regulatory mandates such as meaningful use, eCQMs, population registries.
  • Familiarity with healthcare revenue cycle operations.
  • Knowledge of charging processes, procedures and workflows for hospital and/or professional billing.
  • Background in practice management systems such as ADT, Registration, Scheduling, and Referrals.
  • Knowledge of security and privacy issues in the healthcare industry.
  • Background in clinical and/or billing implementations.
  • 1+ year(s) experience in Epic clinical system configuration, implementation, and support.
  • Certification in additional Epic clinical application(s) beyond Ambulatory.
  • EpicCare Link, EpicCare Everywhere, or Charge Router certification achieved through current version of Epic.
  • Experience with web file updates in support of MyChart and/or EpicCare Link applications.
  • Experience educating clinic staff in the use of an EHR system, preferably Epic.
