Job Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Electronic Systems Integration Division (ESID) is seeking a Software Engineer with the ability to design, develop, and support mission-critical systems on military platforms utilizing the Linux Operating System. ESID is predominantly focused on the research, development, design and application of software supporting a variety of fielded military applications with emphasis on Electronic Warfare (EW) and avionics systems. The successful candidate will embrace the challenge of inserting modern technologies into these complex systems. In this role, you will perform as an Embedded Computer Software Engineer for a mid-sized team of engineers executing ongoing sponsored programs to sustain tactical real-time offensive and defensive systems deployed on DoD platforms.


  • Collaborate with systems engineers and algorithm developers to specify high level software requirements
  • Document software requirements and design implementations
  • Develop executable software using approved processes and coding standards for embedded military system applications
  • Develop and present technical presentations for internal peer reviews and sponsor design reviews
  • Utilize system specifications, interface definitions, and aircraft drawings in the development of software solutions
  • Ensure that all technical work is developed to meet military, safety, and security standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than August.
  • Experience with Linux programming
  • Experience with agile software development methodologies and tools such as GitLab, Atlassian tool set, or equivalent
  • Experience with multiple programming languages such as C/C++, Python, or Ada
  • 1+ year of experience as a co-op student, student assistant, or intern working with military or avionics software intensive systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with autonomous systems including unmanned air/sea/underwater/ground systems
  • Experience with modeling and simulation systems
  • Experience developing software solutions for complex military systems
  • Active SECRET clearance

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
