Job Description

The Software Engineer in the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division will lead the development of software applications across a diverse set of research programs that define next-generation capabilities for our sponsors. The software engineer requires an understanding of common architectural/design patterns and will be able to operate within a dynamic team environment on large, complex systems with multiple moving parts. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.

Job Duties

  • Develop object-oriented software applications
  • Follow agile software development processes and practices
  • Participate in application definition activities including requirement/feature analysis and project scope analysis
  • Develop and enforce coding standards and processes/practices
  • Design, develop, deploy, and manage continuous delivery pipelines and platforms
  • Work with other members of the project and sponsor team to refine requirements, formulate technical approaches, collaborate with various technical groups, review code, and mentor the team
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Bachelors degree and Master's degree with one or both in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering or any other Engineering, Mathematics, or Science related degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelors degree and Master's degree with one or both in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering or any other Engineering, Mathematics, or Science related degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Bachelors degree and Doctoral degree with one or both in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering or any other Engineering, Mathematics, or Science related degree.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Bachelors degree and Master's degree with one or both in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering or any other Engineering, Mathematics, or Science related degree and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelors degree and Master's degree with one or both in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering or any other Engineering, Mathematics, or Science related degree and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Bachelors degree and Doctoral degree with one or both in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering or any other Engineering, Mathematics, or Science related degree and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience with Python, C#, C++, Java, and other scripting/programming languages
  • Experience with Git, issue trackers, as well as chat tools such as Slack and IM
  • Experience with modern database and datastore technologies (e.g. RDBMS, NoSQL, K-V)
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC)/Configuration Management tools (e.g. Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
  • Experience with modern DevOps and Agile software development and production practices
  • Experience leading teams of developers with a proven ability to develop talent

Preferred Qualifications

  • Secret Clearance
  • Experience with service-oriented architectures
  • Experience with cloud-based solutions
  • Experience with embedded and real-time system solutions
  • Experience designing and documenting software architectures
  • Technical diagnostic expertise including problem investigation, reproduction, and resolution skills
  • Experience authoring product requirements documentation

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
