Job Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) System Engineering Division is currently seeking an experienced Software Engineer for a full time research faculty position in the Open Systems Development Branch (OSDB). This position supports development, implementation and applications of modular open architectures for avionics and other complex systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Develop application-level software for military systems
  • Review of customer developed software architectures and design documentation
  • Develop software prototypes to demonstrate the use-case for proposed and/or newly adopted standards requirements
  • Document software requirements and design implementations
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and systems to include latest industry standards, system interfaces, engineering tools, and road maps for current and future updates
  • Participate in technical meetings with sponsors and industry collaborators
  • Develop technical papers for conferences and present briefings to potential sponsors
  • Lead small to mid-sized technical tasks and/or teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree; or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and eleven (11) years' relevant full-time experience; or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or related field and seven (7) years' relevant full-time experience.

NOTE: Consideration may be given to those holding at least a Bachelor's degree and 15+ years of directly related work experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience developing software supporting avionics, electronic warfare or other embedded systems with similar complexity
  • Experience with C, C++, and/or C# programming languages
  • Experience in object oriented software development
  • Experience with Linux or Windows operating systems
  • 7+ years of experience in a technical field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing software, firmware, and applications for Department of Defense (DoD) aerospace and ground vehicle applications
  • Experience developing software in accordance with DO-178 and/or ARINC-653
  • Experience with all phases of the software engineering process including requirements analysis, specification, software architecture, and testing
  • Experience developing software using Agile, Traditional Waterfall, and Spiral development methodologies
  • Experience working with UML and/or SysML
  • Experience working with modular open architecture standards such as SOSA, VICTORY, MORA, FACE, OMS, etc
  • Systems Engineering experience
  • Experience leading small to mid-sized technical tasks and/or teams
  • Active SECRET clearance

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
