Job Description

The software engineer in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) will develop software applications for complex systems working alongside a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to overcome technical challenges and deliver research solutions for our sponsors. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring and other applications. AES sponsors include the armed forces, major defense contractors, and Fortune 100 industrial companies.  

Job Duties

  • Develop object-oriented software applications
  • Follow agile software development processes and practices
  • Interface and coordinate with other team members including other developers, testers, system engineers, etc
  • Support optimization of software for running on specific targets/platforms
  • Support translation of system requirements into software requirements and design
  • Review/Produce technical documentation, designs, and data
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or related field.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Masters degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than December 2021.
  • Experience with Python, C#, C++, Java, and other scripting/programming languages
  • Experience with software version control tools and best practices, i.e. Git
  • Experience developing within Windows and Linux operating systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Secret Clearance
  • Experience developing REST APIs
  • Experience developing Android apps
  • Experience working with automated testing systems
  • Experience working with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines
  • Experience with agile software development methodologies

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
