Job Description

The software and systems integration engineer in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) will support the development and integration of software applications/systems across a diverse set of research programs that define next-generation capabilities for our sponsors. The software and systems integration engineer will integrate embedded systems and subsystems, employ common architectural/design patterns, and advance modern software engineering practices supporting continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD). AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring and other applications.

Job Duties

  • Develop object-oriented/functional software applications
  • Develop software using approved processes for embedded military system applications, e.g. MISRA
  • Participate in application definition activities including requirement/feature analysis and project scope analysis
  • Document software requirements and design implementations
  • Develop tools for CI/CD and code analysis
  • Develop tools for streamlining and automating regression tests and results reporting for hardware-in-the-loop systems
  • Follow agile software development processes and practices
  • Work with other members of the project and sponsor team to refine requirements, formulate technical approaches, collaborate with various technical groups, review code, and mentor the team
  • Develop and present technical presentations for internal peer reviews and sponsor design reviews
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics, or other relevant Engineering or Science degrees.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics, or other relevant Engineering or Science degrees and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics, or other relevant Engineering or Science degrees and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics, or other relevant Engineering or Science degrees.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years of relevant, professional experience
  • Experience with Python, C#, C/C++, Java, Rust, and other scripting/programming languages
  • Experience with Git, issue trackers, as well as chat tools such as Slack and IM

Preferred Qualifications

  • Secret Clearance
  • Experience developing software for military and/or embedded/real-time systems
  • Technical diagnostic expertise including problem investigation, reproduction, and resolution skills
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC)/Configuration Management tools (e.g. Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
  • Experience with modern DevOps and Agile software development and production practices
  • Experience with service-oriented architectures
  • Experience with cloud-based solutions
  • Experience with cybersecurity vulnerability scanning tools/frameworks
  • Hands-on system integration experience in lab/field settings

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
