Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) in Smyrna, GA is seeking a dynamic and analytical candidate to join the Undersea Systems Program Office (USPO) in the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Division (ISRD) of the Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL). The ideal candidate will be an experienced researcher with a desire to apply engineering, physics, and mathematics to undersea system and radar ISR problems of interest to the Department of Defense (DoD). The researcher is expected to support GTRIs undersea and sea surface systems work for the DoD, university-affiliated research centers (UARCs), federally-funded research development centers (FFRDCs), and industry. There are also opportunities for project leadership, business development, and mentorship of junior employees.


The Undersea Systems Program Office has projects that focus on advanced signal processing, adaptive sensor technologies, machine learning, and modeling and simulation for applications that include acoustics, undersea and cross-domain sensing, and autonomy. The program office supports many components of the Navy and the DoD, including the Office of Naval Research, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, and multiple Navy acquisition program offices. Key products include physics-based modeling and simulation tools, system analyses, sensor signal processing algorithms, and real-time prototypes.

Job Duties

  • Participate in the execution of multiple projects simultaneously, where duties include completing assigned technical tasks, collaborating with internal and external colleagues, and communicating their research to the technical team and technical sponsors
  • Develop relationships with current and potential sponsors, contribute to whitepapers and proposals, and set technical direction
  • Lead proposals for new business, mentor junior staff, and lead projects
  • Participate as a subject matter expert (SME) on projects and sponsor-hosted events addressing undersea challenges
  • Collaborate with fellow engineers within your assigned team and across GTRI to research, investigate, and experiment with advanced concepts and technologies
  • Conduct theoretical analysis, model physical and operational concepts, and participate in the development of relevant simulations, as required to satisfy project requirements
  • Document and communicate advanced concepts in a manner that can be understood by internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop internal and external communications (presentations, status reports, guidance documents, requirements, etc.)
  • Participate in and lead, as appropriate, laboratory and field experiments/demonstrations

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess undersea domain experience to support the analysis, design, development, testing, integration, and deployment of new concepts and capabilities
  • Demonstrate undersea domain expertise to support the analysis, design, development, testing, integration, and deployment of new concepts and capabilities
  • Experience in sonar/radar, physics, signal processing, or applied mathematics
  • Knowledge in analyzing and developing concepts and capabilities related to policy, doctrine, tactics, and other disciplines related to the employment of undersea forces
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop creative solutions to managerial and complex technical and operational problems. Technical and operational solutions typically culminate in regular programmatic and technical interactions with government sponsors
  • Possess an established track record as a successful engineer or scientist with demonstrated skills in technical leadership.
  • Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams exhibiting technical and naval operational responsibilities
  • Excellent communicator with an ability to provide informative briefings to outside organizations
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Secret Clearance
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a similar related field
  • Expert-level knowledge of acoustic propagation and signal processing, mine countermeasures (MCM), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), or related disciplines
  • Experience in algorithm development, autonomous systems, and signal processing
  • Experience programming in MATLAB
  • Awareness of Navy organizations, acquisition processes, and Research & Development efforts

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
