Job Description

Design embedded software solutions for the unmanned systems under development within the Unmanned Systems Integration Branch. The unmanned systems include electric and internal combustion powered fixed wing aircraft, electric and turbine powered single rotor helicopters, and electric powered multi-rotor copters. Embedded computing platforms include, but are not limited to: Nvidia Jetson TX2 processors, ST Micro ARM Cortex Micro-controllers, and Xilinx system on a chip processors.

Job Duties

  • Programming, device driver development, and software and hardware testing and debugging.
  • Interface with all disciplines related to Unmanned Systems development including mechanical design, electrical design, and propulsion
  • Support bench-top prototypes, GTRI fielded systems, and customer and partner operated systems
  • Prepare progress reports, O&M manuals, and design review presentations
  • Develop white papers and project proposals
  • Supervise personnel and provide project team leadership
  • Follow designs into the field and participate in Field Testing

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Principal Research Engineer

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 15+ years embedded software experience
  • Good working knowledge of a variety of embedded systems
  • Must be proficient with Linux environment and C/C++ programming languages
  • Consideration may be given to those holding a least a Bachelor's degree and 14+ years of experience in the following:
    1. Embedded software development with micro-controllers, CPUs, GPUs, Flash/EEPROM devices, FPGAs, device drivers, Linux, and VxWorks
    2. Networking protocols including Ethernet, TCP/IP, MPEG, USB, SPI, I2C
    3. SW/HW development tools including cross compilers, version control systems, CI/CD, source level debuggers, in-circuit emulators, logic analyzers, storage oscilloscopes, and network analyzers
    4. Senior-level rank in previous employment with extensive personnel supervision and project team leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Radio Controlled, Unmanned, or Full Scale aircraft
  • FAA pilot's license
