We are currently seeking a Sr. Staff Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC) Engineer to join our growing engineering organization in the Innovation Center - New England (ICNE) located in the Greater Boston Area. 

As a Senior GNC Engineer, you will lead the development, simulation, testing, analysis and product support for systems and sub-systems on AeroVironment’s growing family of unmanned robotics systems. You will be expected to leverage your expertise in robotic and system dynamics, autonomy and estimation and control theory to create fault-tolerant solutions that enable operations in complex, dynamic environments.

The ideal candidate will be an expert in modern control methodologies, digital estimation, and filtering techniques, and be comfortable working in simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and free-roam environments. You will be responsible for GNC systems throughout the product life-cycle, from concept development through deployment and sustainment of the product offering.  This position will require close interaction with team members across many technical disciplines and thus excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for this position.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and lead GNC teams in the development and implementation of solutions across the system, subsystem and payload product space

  • Document designs and analyses with written reports, presentations, and Engineering drawings

  • Characterize, analyze, test, and troubleshoot control system hardware and software subsystems

  • Develop and maintain tools to perform robot test data reduction and analysis analyze systems and flight test data to support model improvements and root cause investigation of failures and anomalies

  • Lead GNC-related design requirements development and design reviews

  • Emphasize reusable hardware, software and GNC design components throughout the product development lifecycle

  • Ensure you and your team embrace cost as a metric

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications & Background

  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) required due to ITAR

  • MS Degree in a Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC) related Engineering field or equivalent practical experience

  • 12 years of related experience

  • Technical expertise in: robot dynamics and control (flight emphasis), sensor fusion, estimation, filtering techniques, INS/GPS navigation system development, GPS-denied navigation and path planning

  • Understanding of aircraft and helicopter flight dynamics a plus

  • Understanding of autonomous real-time robotic operations

  • Experienced with MATLAB, Simulink and software running in real-time on embedded platforms

  • Experience in safety-critical GNC solutions a plus

  • Experience in certifying GNC solution by regulatory agencies (e.g. FAA, DoT, etc.) a plus
