Project/Unit Description

The Senior Software Engineer will develop and integrate complex software solutions, execute common architectural/design patterns, and perform modern software engineering practices, i.e. continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD). The position will support a dynamic team environment across complex systems with multiple moving parts. This position is in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) at GTRI. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring and other applications.

Job Purpose

  • A Senior Software Engineer will design, develop, test various software languages.
  • Must be proficient in programming languages such as Java, C, C++, Ruby, Python, Scala and Groovy software.
  • The SSE will manage software development teams, provides technical leadership, establish software development lifecycle practices and processes.
  • This position requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, continuous integration, continuous delivery, DevOps, API development, container development, and distributed systems.
  • In this position, you will apply engineering principles to software creation, managing production releases of software, performing code reviews, merging feature development branches, and analyzing and triaging issues.
  • Necessary skills needed for this position are: programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, design and architecture, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, debugging software, testing software, and working in development teams. Works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform software development, software debugging, software modification/enhancement, and software documentation.
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts.
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop object-oriented/functional software applications.
  • Participate in application definition activities including requirement/feature analysis and project scope analysis.
  • Architect and implement robust software to meet system and functional requirements.
  • Develop tools for streamlining and automating regression tests and results reporting, including for hardware-in-the-loop systems.
  • Follow/lead agile software development processes and practices.
  • Lead software development and integration teams.
  • Work within cross-functional teams to refine requirements, formulate technical approaches, implement designs, review code, and mentor team members.
  • Support CI/CD and code analysis efforts as part of the software team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with programming/scripting languages (e.g. Python, C/C++, C#, Java, and Rust, etc).
  • Experience with Git, issue trackers, as well as chat tools such as Slack and IM.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DoD secret clearance.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC)/Configuration Management tools (e.g. Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • Experience with modern DevOps and Agile software development and production practices.
  • Experience developing software for military and/or embedded/real-time systems.
  • Experience with embedded operating systems (e.g. Yocto, VxWorks, Greenhills, FreeRTOS, etc).
  • Experience with Linux system administration.
  • Experience with developing mobile applications.
  • Hands-on system integration experience in lab/field settings.

  • 9 years of related experience with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics or other relevant Engineering or Science degrees.
  • 7 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics or other relevant Engineering or Science degrees.
  • 4 years of related experience with a Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. with one or more in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics or other relevant Engineering or Science degrees.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
