About the role

The R&D Solutions business unit provides Callaghan Innovation's core in-house research and technical capability. Our experts collaborate with firms and industries to provide R&D services that enhance the product or service development process and practice towards accelerating commercialisation.

The transducers and sensing team have the capability in ultrasound transducers, sensing system design and prototype development, hyperspectral and microwave imaging, optical systems, applied physics for sensing, analogue and digital electronics, and machine learning. Current application areas include industrial sensing and measurement, non-destructive testing, medical device solutions, on-farm management, and integrated sensing systems.

Reporting to the Team Leader Transducers and Sensing, the purpose of your role within this team, is to design, fabricate and test ultrasonic transducers, and develop these devices for a variety of applications and end-users in the commercial marketplace.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing effective technical leadership in developing major applied research projects and programmes to effectively deliver commercial solutions for New Zealand industry customers
  • Building and managing effective working relationships with internal and external partners, customers, and other stakeholders
  • Ensuring optimal use of available resources in delivering planned business outcomes within agreed timeframes, meeting financial targets, and ensuring adherence to quality standards
  • Contributing to the development of new ideas, skills, and networks to the team in areas that have the capacity to benefit New Zealand industry

To be successful in this role, you will have the following:

  • A strong advanced technical qualification (preferably a PhD) in a relevant field of science (Applied Physics, Electronics, Engineering Physics, Materials Science)
  • Require existing skills in application and device analysis, transducer design and CAD development, microfabrication, composite and structured materials development, front-end analogue electronics development, and device testing
  • Commercial experience with a track record of successful delivery to a broad range of customers and ability to pivot to stay relevant to our stakeholders and strategy demands
