The Grid-interactive Controls Group (GIC) within the Electrification and Energy Infrastructures Division (EEID) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking to fill a Senior R&D Staff position to perform RD&D in the areas of optimization and control of large-scale energy systems. This position will provide technical leadership in optimization, market design, system analytics, machine learning, and high-performance computing with applications to power grid, building system and building-to-grid integration. It helps address the R&D challenges of emerging complexity in modern energy systems with a significant number of distributed energy resources and intelligent responsive loads in a hierarchical structure. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. You will be required to conduct independent research, develop new ideas and contribute to proposals, engage with relationship managers in relevant areas, prepare manuscripts for publication, and present their work to clients and at conferences.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

You will work independently under general guidance provided by the Group Leader and Relationship Managers, and will be responsible for leading interdisciplinary, world-class research efforts addressing the science and technology challenges of emerging complexity in modern energy systems.



  • Advances the state of the art in optimization and control theory for realizing reliable and resilience end-to-end power system operations by maximizing the utilization of demand-side flexibility through various grid-centric integrations such as building-to-grid integration
  • Engages and influences a diverse set of government and industry clients on new concepts and R&D opportunities
  • Leads moderate to complex proposals, and manages scoping, scheduling, and budgeting of complex interdisciplinary tasks, projects or programs
  • Builds and motivates strong multi-disciplinary R&D teams of moderate to large size to address R&D challenges
  • Manages day-to-day R&D activities and provides scientific and technical authority, leadership and direction
  • Exercises fluid and independent judgment to ensure the roles and activities of staff are consistent with the organizational goals
  • Drives organizational objectives through strategic planning and develops long-term technical capabilities that deliver national impact
  • Publishes as primary or contributing author on technical publications, reports, or presentation
  • Serves as technical resource and/or mentor to staff across organization and assists in attracting top talents
  • Leads national and international professional community activities and substantial external collaborations



  • To Relationship and Project Managers for performing assigned project roles on time and within budget, as well as for properly executing task and project management roles and identifying changes that could affect project success
  • To Group Leader for maintaining expertise and communicating development and infrastructure needs, mentoring junior level staff, as well as identifying opportunities for business development and growth



Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. with a minimum of 6 years relevant experience, or M.S. with a minimum of 8 years’ experience, or B.S. with 10 years’ experience
  • Strong expertise/experience in power grid, building system and/or building-to-grid integration
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively
  • Proven track of records on authoring publications and leading winning proposals
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working with a highly diverse team
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for client engagement


Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering or applied sciences with 8 or more years of experience 
  • Recognized by the peer network as a technical leader who possesses demonstrated record of scientific contribution to national/international endeavors in advanced optimization and control with strong leadership competencies
  • Demonstrated strong ability to build new research programs working collaboratively with others across a broad spectrum of disciplines to accomplish strategic goals
  • Demonstrated strong experience in energy and ancillary service markets, engineering economics, and game theory for power system operation and planning
  • Demonstrated strong experience in optimization modeling and various linear/nonlinear optimization solvers with applications to energy storage systems
  • Demonstrated good experience in demand response, energy storage, renewable energy, microgrid, buildings and their integration to power grid operations
  • Demonstrated good experience in advanced data analytics and machine/reinforcement learning to address the emerging R&D challenges in modern energy systems
  • Demonstrated good experience in voltage stability and management in power distribution systems with high penetration of distributed energy resources
  • Demonstrated strong project leadership for major projects with multi-disciplinary teams, and commensurate project management skills in scoping, scheduling, and budgeting
  • Demonstrated good experience with tool development and co-simulation test bed design to support the test, verification and demonstration of new technologies
  • Strong programming skills in Julia, Python, Modelica, C++, Java, and working experience with Github and Docker
  • Prior experience working with DOE offices including OE and BTO
