Description

Job Summary:

This position is in support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL). The Engineer II will provide support in marine instrumentation, mooring design, remote operation vehicle platforms, and observing system support, working in GLERL's Observing Systems and Advanced Technology (OSAT) branch.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Working with technicians, engineers, and scientists to develop hypoxia, climate, and ecosystem observational components
  • Working on GLERL research vessels in offshore and on shore environments
  • Working with Observing Systems and Advanced Technology (OSAT) technicians, engineers, and principal investigators to develop observing systems
  • Preparing instrumentation for deployment
  • Deploying instrumentation and mooring systems
  • Retrieving instrumentation and moorings
  • Archiving data at the end of each field season
  • Preparing instrumentation for calibration
  • Working with Real-time Coastal Observation Network (ReCON) and harmful algal bloom (HAB) observing systems teams on engineering systems development projects
  • Assisting in piloting autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) as part of a team for long term deployments
  • Performing field work as a passenger on marine vessels

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Work will be conducted at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) in Ann Arbor, MI and applicable field locations
  • Travel is not anticipated to exceed 30% for the year, within the Great Lakes basin
  • Telework to be approved for tasks conducive to remote work


Requirements

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 4 years + of full-time engineering experience
    • Advanced degrees or certifications may qualify for shorter periods of required experience
  • Experience with programming instrumentation, designing, and deploying moorings
  • Willingness and ability to work on a marine vessel in the Great Lakes
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a technical team
  • Excellent programming skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Basic familiarity with troubleshooting marine electronics and instrumentation
  • General knowledge of freshwater ecology/biology/limnology
  • Ability to operate material handling equipment (MHE) safely: 6K forklift, pallet jacks, working around overhead cranes, loading equipment onto trailers
    • No prior certification is required, and hands on training will be conducted prior to operating MHE
  • Ability to work with small hand tools and familiarity with machine shop environment
  • Ability to lift and carry a 50lb load

Desired:

  • 2+ years of experience working on marine instrumentation
  • 2+ years of experience working at sea on research cruises
  • Computer networking skills
  • Familiarity with sensor installation and integration into a real-time environmental observation network
  • Familiarity with programmable underwater sensors
  • Experience with instrument programming and data retrieval, quality control, and upload to relevant data archives
