Job Description

Georgia Tech Research Institute's Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research (CIPHER) Laboratory is currently seeking seasoned software researcher with 10+ years of experience whose primary skills will be in architecting, coding, and leadership in order to support secure information systems research. Candidates must enjoy working with open source software and cutting edge technologies. Candidates will contribute to sponsored research projects and have an opportunity to interact with other scientists and engineers.

Researchers will also be expected to lead projects/efforts, mentor junior engineers, and participate in writing proposals, white papers, reports, and technical papers. Occasional travel to support meetings, reviews, and system deployments is possible.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Architect and design frameworks used by applications that are running on J2EE platforms
  • Provide insight on engineering best practices like pair programming, TDD, ATDD, and/or Refactoring techniques
  • Create, refactor, and/or implement Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and / or Microservice Architectures (MSA)
  • Assist with and understand the building of applications using stored procedures, functions, and triggers on RDBMS such as Oracle
  • Own the quality of the product, from code architecture to end-user quality
  • Engage in code reviews to ensure team members are contributing code that meets the short and long-term goals of our applications and architecture
  • Promote innovation within your team's work
  • Articulate context internally for the team and to the larger organization
  • Consult with management, development, infrastructure, test, and operational teams to address issues relating to application architecture, such as performance or availability, and recommend solutions
  • Provide the technical coaching to get your team to experiment and to solve technical problems in unique ways
  • Organize the accumulated knowledge gained by the team so that all team members have easy access to this body of knowledge
  • Collaborate across business, engineering, and product stakeholders to drive holistic technology implementations while maintaining a constant focus on delivering strategic value
  • Lead and participate in the conceptual phases of identifying and solving business problems and initiatives
  • Own Architectural design of the major pieces (business capabilities and internal processing)
  • Provide Oversight and governance of current and next generation software solutions
  • Provide technical expertise in proof-of-concept, archetype evaluations, and implementations
  • May contribute to hands-on development, as necessary
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field of study.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field of study and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of hands-on coding experience in Java
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in engineering practices like TDD, ATDD, and Refactoring techniques
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and Microservice Architectures
  • Proficient in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SQL, Data Structures, with a good knowledge of their ecosystems
  • Understands and can implement Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery
  • Strong Agile experience using KANBAN or Scrum
  • Experience designing systems with considerations for scalability, resiliency, and performance
  • Working knowledge of Enterprise Framework, Application, and Integration Patterns
  • Successfully delivered software solutions from conception to production
  • Experience successfully working with Developers, Architects, and Product Owners to give options for potential solutions
  • Experience architecting and designing frameworks to be used by applications that are running on a J2EE platform
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming
  • Debugging, troubleshooting, and the ability to translate symptoms and problems into root causes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong skills in legacy and modern Java technologies, JSON, web services (REST and SOAP), JavaScript, data access components, and XML
  • Experience with container technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift
  • Experience with IaaS, PaaS, and Cloud Services such as AWS
  • Experience with designing and implementing multi-tenant systems
  • Strong leadership experience from discovery through implementation
  • Ability to see all tasks through to completion, consistently, with a high attention to detail
  • Demonstrable experience authoring product requirements documentation
  • Outstanding writing skills with an ability to convey complex, technical information in an engaging and easily understood manner
  • Strong collaboration and coaching skills
  • A continual learner that stays up-to-date on the latest technologies

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
