Job Description

GTRIs Signals and Systems Division in the Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) seeks qualified candidates for the Senior RF System Modeling Engineer position. This position involves applying scientific, engineering, and mathematical concepts to perform critical analysis regarding the implementation of RF systems in future warfare. RF areas of interest include radar systems, electronic warfare concepts, and communications systems. This position supports ACL programs that focus on evaluating the next generation of sensors (including novel distributed sensing concepts) and operational research that addresses the appropriate platform and sensor mix for specified military missions. The government often uses these results to inform military acquisition strategy.

The candidate will both lead and actively participate in multi-disciplinary trade studies that answer various technical and operational concerns. Leading efforts requires program planning and organization of the technical tasks, establishing metrics for clear evaluation of the task, coordinating with other technical disciplines and other leadership roles, and formal and informal communications with sponsors and lab leadership. Trade studies may consist of technical tasks ranging from conceptual systems design, radar signal processing, evaluation of electronic attack or electronic protection concepts, threat analyses and projection, system requirements derivation, and overall system performance evaluation. Systems may be evaluated in scenarios covering a wide variety of operational constraints, including operation in permissive, congested, and contested environments.

The Signals and Systems Division engages in research related to advanced sensor concepts, electronic warfare, signal and image processing development, current and future threat analysis, operational employment concepts, test and evaluation, and knowledge management. These technical areas are primarily researched through the application of modeling, simulation, and analysis.

Job Duties

  • Perform detailed analysis for current and next-generation RF sensors regarding detection and tracking performance for various sensor types, including early warning, acquisition, and fire control systems.
  • Develop custom software that models and evaluates new radar and employment concepts, EA and EP techniques, and communication network performance.
  • Employ radar signal processing techniques to evaluate performance parameters of radar and electronic warfare concepts.
  • Derive technical metrics to show trends in data that describe research results, then develop and execute data analytics. Dataset sizes vary from small to extremely large.
  • Work with other engineers and software experts to set up, execute and reduce data from force-on-force simulations
  • Document research findings in both PowerPoint and technical prose.
  • Provide technical leadership and interface with technical and non-technical sponsors as well as internal management.
  • Perform programmatic and technical planning tasks for sponsored and internal efforts.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, or equivalent discipline and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, or equivalent discipline and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, or equivalent discipline and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, or equivalent discipline and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, or equivalent discipline and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous experience in the evaluation or design of radar systems, communication systems, electronic warfare systems, aerospace systems, or current/future kill chains.
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of RF phenomenology, RF system design, systems trades needs for radar and communications systems, and familiarity with RF modeling and simulation tools.
  • Experience using MATLAB, Python, C++, or other languages needed to perform modeling, simulation, and analysis tasks.
  • Excellent analytical and computer skills needed for numerical modeling, data reduction, and the ability to formulate conclusions from large and diverse datasets.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are critical as work often informs decisions at the top levels of the military and intelligence communities. Needed experience includes writing status and technical reports and experience delivering presentations regarding program status and technical findings to management and government customers.
  • Experience in technical leadership. This includes leading technical tasks for program execution and organizational technical planning.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to lead and guide technical tasks within given schedule and budget constraints and coordinate with other technical disciplines and organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • TS/SCI Clearance
  • Experience using force-on-force simulation tools (AFSIM, Benchmark, Suppressor, etc.).
  • Experience employing statistical evaluation, optimization methods, or machine learning techniques in design and analysis tasks.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
