Job Description

The Senior/Principal Researcher in the Systems Engineering Research Division (SERD) is responsible for program development, project management, and technical research leadership related to the research and development of complex systems supporting Department of Defense (DoD) applications. This position is expected to serve as the Project Director (PD) across a project portfolio to meet contractual sponsor requirements and expectations. The Systems Engineering Research Division conducts applied research in model-based systems engineering (MBSE), including developing system modeling best practices, modeling and simulation, and development of tooling to support MBSE; strategic decision support including analytical methods, optimization approaches for complete decision spaces, and Tradespace tool development with interactive coordinated visualizations; and human systems engineering including the application of HSE principles to the design, development, and evaluation of complex systems.

Job Duties:

  • Conduct program development to include identifying and executing on business development opportunities
  • Monitor announcements for Request for Proposals/Broad Agency Announcements, leading white paper or proposal development efforts, and executing research and successful bids.
  • Execute responsibilities of a Project Director, monitoring project requirements, budget, and schedule
  • Serve as the primary interface with the sponsor to communicate project status and ensure the research team tasks are aligned with sponsor priorities
  • Mentor other researchers related to technical skills and/or program/project management
  • Participate in technical meetings with GTRI and sponsor personnel
  • Develop technical papers for conferences, speak publicly, and present briefings to sponsors and potential sponsors
  • Develop original and innovative contributions that are nationally recognized for their excellence as documented by external peer review
  • Provide leadership in developing and managing technical thrust involving SERD related projects
  • Participate in seminars and national symposia while maintaining memberships on national committees and/or offices in professional societies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Bachelors degree and Masters degree required, with one or both in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Business Administration, Management, Information Technology, or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelors degree and Masters degree required, with one or both in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Business Administration, Management, Information Technology, or related field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Masters degree required, with one or both in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Business Administration, Management, Information Technology, or related field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Bachelors degree and Masters degree required, with one or both in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Business Administration, Management, Information Technology, or related field and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Masters degree required, with one or both in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Business Administration, Management, Information Technology, or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a task lead with budgetary authority and/or project/program management experience
  • Experience in model-based systems engineering, traditional systems engineering, or one of the core research areas described above
  • Experience writing white papers and/or proposals
  • Experience authoring and delivering technical briefings to technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, JIRA, Confluence, and Box
  • Process improvement experience and/or training, such as Six Sigma or formal management education
  • Experience with agile software engineering and related tooling to manage software development efforts
  • Experience with modern probabilistic design methods and techniques. Design of experiments, Taguchi methods, response surface equations, robust design, risk and uncertainty, technology assessment and selection
  • Experience with modern multidisciplinary design optimization methods and techniques. Numerical optimization with applications, stochastic methods, Genetic Algorithms, multidisciplinary decomposition methods, multi-level optimization strategies.
  • Experience with human systems engineering and its application throughout the DoD acquisition life cycle
  • Systems modeling experience and familiarity with SysML authoring tools (e.g., Cameo, Rhapsody)
  • Software programming experience (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, C, C++, Java, etc.)
