Job Description

GTRI's Advanced Warfighting Technologies Division in the Advanced Concepts Laboratory seeks qualified candidates for the position of Counter Biological Threat Researcher. The role of this position is to apply technical skills to support the development and assessment of technologies and concepts to detect, characterize, and mitigate biological threats. The job involves leading and supporting research projects to deliver tailored solutions to project sponsors for both national security and public health applications. Expected duties include:

  • experiment design & execution,
  • laboratory operations,
  • modeling and simulation,
  • data analysis,
  • research and evaluation of candidate solutions to support research projects developing prototypes.

The Advanced Warfighting Technologies Division provides world-class, forward-looking thought leadership and turn-key, best-of-class technical solutions to the countering weapons of mass destruction (CWMD) and improvised threat enterprise for U.S. Government and other sponsors.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master's degree in biology, microbiology, virology, genetics/genomics, biochemistry, or a related degree and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master's degree in biology, microbiology, virology, genetics/genomics, biochemistry, or a related degree and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in biology, microbiology, virology, genetics/genomics, biochemistry, or a related degree and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master's degree in biology, microbiology, virology, genetics/genomics, biochemistry, or a related degree and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in biology, microbiology, virology, genetics/genomics, biochemistry, or a related degree and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidate must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Experience working in Public Health or a clinical laboratory
  • Experience in assay development (nucleic acid-based or antibody-based) for pathogen detection and identification
  • Experience working within the regulatory confines of a Lab Quality Management System
  • Experience in environmental and/or clinical sample extraction technologies
  • Experience in microbiological methods
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in human DNA forensics
  • Experience in bioinformatics
  • Experience in metagenomics-based experimental approaches
  • Knowledge of R or Python
  • Project Management skills

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position are required to be U.S. Citizens.

Ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance upon hire
