We have an opening for an experienced physicist to independently lead, develop, research, design, and analyze models of the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and interface with sponsors, modeling personnel, and subject-matter experts from across the NNSA and DOD nuclear enterprise. This position reports programmatically to the Associate Program Leader for Nuclear Weapons Evaluation and Planning within the Weapons Infrastructure Program and administratively to the Design Physics Division within the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Directorate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Lead multi-disciplinary technical teams in the development and exercising of modeling and simulation tools to understand and inform the stockpile program of record and potential excursions.
  • Provide physics-informed subject-matter expertise for evaluation of future stockpile systems and requirements to be used in these modeling and simulation tools.
  • Build and maintain effective collaborations and working relationships with the NNSA and DOD enterprise modeling communities, including engagement of relevant decision makers.
  • Develop and implement highly complex enterprise capability plans and prepare and present proposals for future modeling and simulation efforts.
  • Support interagency studies related to the US nuclear weapons enterprise and provide relevant subject-matter expertise.
  • Provide technical leadership, management, planning, and support of activities for special studies as directed by senior laboratory leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD in physics or engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Expert working knowledge of nuclear enterprise modeling and analysis related to the US stockpile and a broad knowledge of the nuclear security enterprise.
  • Significant experience analyzing the nuclear stockpile program of record, including collaborations with NNSA headquarters, labs, and plants.
  • Experience collaborating with the DOD in the nuclear arena, in particular the Military Departments, Combatant Commands, and/or the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
  • Significant experience with nuclear weapons physics codes and with the fundamentals of nuclear weapon design.
  • Experience working in a major program supporting the Stockpile Stewardship Program.
  • Experience developing and presenting project proposals to NNSA and DOD stakeholders and developing project plans, deliverables and timelines.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise senior management, external partners, and external sponsors.
  • Extensive experience leading teams of employees from diverse backgrounds and mentoring junior staff members.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant work experience leading interagency studies at NNSA and/or DOD.
  • Extensive experience working in Washington, DC as a detailee or IPA.
  • Established scientific contributions and external recognition, demonstrated by a publication record or other professional activities.

Security Clearance: This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
