Powertech has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Distribution Grid Management and Technology Senior Manager to join a team of professionals based at Powertech Labs in Surrey B.C.

 

Business Overview

 

Powertech’s Grid Modernization Sector is an independent commercial testing and validation facility that offers testing, engineering services, and consulting expertise to support utilities in grid modernization. The sector collaborates with utilities, vendors, and Original Equipment Manufacturers – OEMs – in design, product development, technology evaluation, interoperability testing, and pre-deployment validation. These services reduce the risk of bringing advanced technologies to the industry. The sector operates the Distribution
Automation and Optimization Test Centre, one of the largest, outdoor, full-scale distribution system demonstration facilities, and is currently supporting evaluation and testing of SCADA, Distribution Automation, Distribution Management Systems (DMS), and DMS applications, including Fault Location, Isolation and Restoration (FLISR). Our team has first-hand experience in the design, implementation, and testing of IT-OT integration for large utilities in North America. The sector evaluates new communications technologies for standards conformance, and our lab has capabilities to assess security and privacy implementation of communications systems for critical infrastructure. Our practice areas are broadly categorized into:

Position Overview

 

Under the direction of the Sector Director for Grid Modernization, the incumbent will lead the Distribution Grid Management group. The selected candidate will be expected to lead every aspect of the team. Responsibilities include establishing an understanding of the global industry trends, developing a long-range strategy, and operationalizing this plan to ensure continued customer engagement and support, growth and day-to-day operational excellence. This leadership role requires teamwork with corporate support functions and the other Managers across Powertech Labs. Further, the incumbent is expected to be a technical expert in his/her own right and to provide technical leadership and day-to-day management to the team. The selected candidate will be expected to engage customers from around North America and beyond, identify and develop new service offerings to meet emerging and market needs and, collaborate with market participants to advance technology and the associated industry standards. With a relentless focus on quality, the incumbent is expected to pursue policies and activities that constantly raise the quality accreditation and performance of the sector. The selected candidate must have a demonstrated history of participating in national and international forums on relevant technical areas. Authoring and presenting technical publications is seen as important to maintaining and growing this sectors profile.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Manage, lead and support a team of Engineers in the field of electrical engineering involved in projects of varying complexities relating to distribution automation, optimization, security, equipment testing and grid impact assessment of electric vehicles and electrification. Work will include technical consultation, testing and validation, advisory and technical studies.
  • Accountable for all aspects of the team and department including, but not limited to, financial (P&L), staff, facilities and laboratories, safety, quality, environment, capital expansion, customer interactions and business development.
  • Ensure that qualified internal and external resources are available and have the required expertise and tools to meet work plans; allocate resources to various projects within the work program; assign and coordinate work, and provide instructions, advice and technical guidance to other engineers, project and technical staff; review work in progress and assess completed work for accuracy, required results and compliance with quality assurance standards and procedures; where necessary provide mentorship and coaching to team members
  • Lead in business development activities by seeking out opportunities in areas of expertise, contacting prospective clients, preparing proposals and conducting client follow-up
  • Lead in designing test plans and procedures where standards may not exist or may not be mature
  • Review and approve/stamp electrical system designs, reports and drawings and ensure compliance with appropriate regulations
  • Appraise staff performance and provide input into an employee development program in order to maintain the required expertise; assist the sector director in staff selection, training and recommending promotions
  • Provide technical leadership and act as an expert technical resource. Responsible for providing professional and technical advice in areas of utility distribution system planning, operations, design and equipment.
  • Develop a robust program of new services in support of growing the team and the services offered to Powertech’s customers by monitoring and understanding industry/market trends, issues, and opportunities and assess for feasibility and market size
  • Work collaboratively with other teams across Powertech, and seek opportunities for inter-disciplinary projects

Qualifications

 

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by universities in Canada; graduate degree is an asset
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC is required
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in Electrical Engineering with special focus on Distribution Systems, with equipment at 33 kV and below for both overhead and underground systems
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a highly qualified team of technical experts
  • Ability to create and present robust business cases on behalf of clients to advance major investments in modern distribution system technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to grow business and manage costs and revenue

 

Required technical experience and knowledge

 

  • Strong practical knowledge of utility electrical distribution system design
  • Deep technical expertise in two or more areas in the distribution grid management areas: Distribution automation, NERC CIP and SCADA, Microgrid designs, Grid impact assessments for electrification (EV, C&I load management etc.)
  • Familiarity with smart+communicating distribution grid technologies market and equipment
  • Thorough understanding of principles of managing multifaceted, multidisciplinary, technical projects; including of budgets, resources, schedules, and deliverables through proposal, definition, initiation, planning, execution, reporting, and closure stages

  • Demonstrated ability to manage the successful implementation and delivery of projects/services to the client on time and within budget with high quality

  • Demonstrated prudent decision-making capabilities
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts, principles and solutions
  • Demonstrated rigor in modeling safety behaviors and safety awareness for working in laboratories and the field
