Job Description

The Senior Embedded Software Engineer in the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Applied Embedded Systems (AES) Division will develop and design software for applications supporting electronic systems and lead multi-disciplinary engineering project teams. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.

Job Duties

  • Collaborate with Systems Engineers to specify software requirements
  • Document software requirements and design implementations
  • Develop software using approved processes for embedded military system applications
  • Develop and present technical presentations for internal peer reviews and sponsor design reviews
  • Estimate software development activities
  • Lead small to mid-sized technical tasks and/or teams
  • Develop software/system architectures and requirements and translate them into clear engineering/design artifacts
  • Mentor junior engineering team members
  • Organize major project and program thrusts to include coordinating and leading development teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Bachelor's and Master's Degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics or other relevant Engineering or Science degree and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's and Master's Degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics or other relevant Engineering or Science degree and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral and Master's Degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics or other relevant Engineering or Science degree and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Bachelor's and Master's Degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics or other relevant Engineering or Science degree and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral and Master's Degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mathematics, Physics or other relevant Engineering or Science degree and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of embedded software development experience
  • Experience in developing complex software-intensive military or avionics systems using software engineering processes and methodologies
  • Software engineering experience with developing in languages C/C++.
  • Experience with embedded programming using real-time operating systems (RTOS) or Linux
  • Experience integrating and troubleshooting systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing software for electronic warfare systems
  • Experience in processor board bring-up, bare metal, RTOS, or Linux
  • Experience interfacing with and developing software for processors in a programmable System-on-a-Chip (SoC)
  • Experience with in-system reprogramming using JTAG, Ethernet, serial, or custom interfaces
  • Experience with embedded processors such as Microblaze or Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) SoC
  • Experience with configuration management and requirements management systems
  • Experience leading small to mid-sized technical tasks and/or teams
  • Active DoD Secret clearance

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
