Job Description

The senior electronic systems architect in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) Division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) will support the design and development of cutting-edge, complex electronic systems that define next-generation capabilities for our sponsors. The position requires technical expertise to generate robust system design artifacts and interface with multi-disciplinary engineering teams and sponsors to design and develop electronic systems. Additionally, the senior electronic systems architect will lead and mentor a team of engineers and developers across projects and tasks. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.

Job Duties

  • Develop system architectures and requirements and translate them into clear engineering/design artifacts
  • Build system solutions based on requirements and required integrations with novel/existing applications, systems, or platforms
  • Identify, select and test candidate technologies, approaches, and architectures to ensure robust solutions
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and systems to include keeping up-to-date on industry standards and road maps for current and future technology updates
  • Collaborate with sponsors, and project teams to ensure project deliverables and requirements are met
  • Provide thought leadership in technical domain areas of focus
  • Develop technical papers for conferences and develop/present briefings to potential sponsors
  • Mentor peer and junior engineering team members
  • Lead teams of engineers and/or projects
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Bachelor's Degree and Master's degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's Degree and Master's degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Bachelor's Degree and Doctoral degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Bachelor's Degree and Master's degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Bachelor's Degree and Doctoral degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience developing robust system architectures
  • Experience developing and/or integrating electronics systems
  • Experience with requirements development and traceability through all system development phases
  • Experience leading engineering teams and/or projects
  • 8+ years of applicable work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Secret Clearance
  • Experience with avionics or other electronic systems used in Department of Defense (DOD) systems
  • Experience leading large scale/complex Agile programs
  • Experience with the Electronic Warfare domain and basic concepts
  • Experience facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders
  • Experience as a systems architect on production/fielded systems

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
