Job Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Systems Engineering Research Division (SERD) conducts research in the fields of Model Based Systems Engineering, Human Systems Integration, Open Systems Architecture, data analytics, modeling & simulation, and collaborative software solutions to enable applications of these disciplines. SERD is currently seeking a Senior Decision Support Engineer well-versed in systems engineering and strategic decision support for a full time research faculty position in the Methods and Analysis Development Branch (MADB).

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Develop quantitative decision support models including mathematical models to generate and assess alternatives related to supporting sponsor decision support activities
  • Interface with sponsors to deconstruct and define problem sets related to strategic decision support
  • Design and implement executable decision support frameworks with tailored visualizations based on sponsor needs
  • Design, implement and execute automated tests as well as unit and integration tests to verify framework functionality
  • Author and present interim and final reports to sponsors capturing project goals, milestones and accomplishments
  • Support and conduct business development activities with current and potential sponsors including identifying open solicitations for response and writing white papers and proposals
  • Lead small to mid-sized tasks, projects and/or technical teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Consideration will be given to candidates that do not have a Master's degree with 10+ years of experience performing in roles that align with the responsibilities and requirements defined for this position.
  • Experience with one or more of the the following software programming languages: Python, Matlab, Julia, R, Scala
  • Experience with decision analysis methods, tools, and/or concepts (e.g. TOPSIS, QFD, Pareto Frontier, Value Analysis, Utility Theory, Pairwise Comparison, Design of Experiments, Surrogate Modeling, etc.)
  • Experience with one or more approaches to modeling and simulation (e.g. agent-based modeling, discrete event simulation, systems dynamics, network modeling, Bayesian networks, Probabilistic Graph Models, cellular automata, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a configuration management system (e.g. Git)
  • Experience leading small to mid-sized research teams
  • Experience with the Jupyter ecosystem including Jupyter Notebooks and JupyterLab
  • Experience with Django or other Python web frameworks (e.g. Flask, Tornado)
  • Experience with the Atlassian software development support tool stack (e.g. JIRA, BitBucket, Confluence, Bamboo)
  • Active in the open source community (e.g. GitHub, BitBucket, Stack Overflow)
  • PhD in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
