Job Description

The Senior Avionics Development Engineer will develop modular open architecture standards and systems based on those standards. The position will combine experience developing electronic systems and equipment with the opportunity to lead engineering project teams. This position is in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) at GTRI. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.

Job Duties

  • Provide technical leadership in the development of hardware and systems based on modular open architecture standards
  • Provide subject matter expertise for military electronics systems for one or more of the following: navigation, communications, sensors, electronic warfare, mission systems, and displays & controls
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and systems to include keeping up-to-date on industry standards, system interfaces, engineering tools, and road maps for current and future updates
  • Contribute to standards consortium efforts to develop modular open standards
  • Collaborate with sponsors and project teams to ensure project deliverables and requirements are met
  • Develop technical papers for conferences and develop/present briefings to potential sponsors
  • Support Department of Defense (DoD) sponsors in the decision making regarding the use of modular open standards
  • Mentor junior engineering team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Bachelors Degree and Master's Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other Engineering or Science related disciplines and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelors Degree and Master's Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other Engineering or Science related disciplines and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Master's Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other Engineering or Science related disciplines.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Bachelors Degree and Master's Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other Engineering or Science related disciplines and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelors Degree and Master's Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other Engineering or Science related disciplines and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Master's Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other Engineering or Science related disciplines and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with avionics or other electronic systems used in Department of Defense (DOD) systems
  • Experience developing and/or integrating electronics systems for use in DoD applications
  • Experience with requirements development and traceability through all system development phases
  • Experience leading engineering tasks and/or teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with modular open standards such as Sensor Open System Architectures (SOSA), Hardware Open Systems Technology (HOST), Modular Open Suite of Standards (CMOSS), OpenVPX, etc.
  • Experience with Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) and/or development processes for high-reliability software for DOD systems
  • Experience with environmental test requirements and procedures for rugged DoD applications
  • Experience with managing budget and schedule for technical tasks

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
