Job Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking experienced Aviation System Engineers interested in intellectually challenging and rewarding work. Located in Huntsville, Alabama, ASL conducts world-class applied research in avionics modeling, simulation, analysis, testing, evaluation, and software development to support the government sponsors.

The Senior Aviation Systems Engineer is a research faculty position in the Aviation Systems Division (ASD) of Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) supporting the Program Executive Office (PEO) Aviation sponsored research in Huntsville, AL. This position will support the development of safety-critical avionics and aircraft architectures that meet DO-178C airworthiness and security requirements in various Army efforts, including Air-Ground Networking Radio, Blue Force Tracking, Degraded Visual Environment, and the Improved Data Modem.

Job Duties:

  • Support system integration and software development projects for the Department of Defense aircraft system improvement programs.
  • Coordinate system development tasks to include design, integration, and formal testing.
  • Use system specifications and interface descriptions for integration into an aircraft system of systems.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for system architectural framework, methods, and tools.
  • Ensure that technical work is performed to appropriate professional standards and that technical requirements are met.
  • Develop innovative solutions to meet system requirements.
  • Manage and document system configurations.
  • Manage reports of system deficiencies.
  • Create and investigate software change requests.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related avionics or aviation field, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related avionics or aviation field, and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related avionics or aviation field, and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related avionics or aviation field, and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related avionics or aviation field, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 11+ years prior experience
  • Experience in hardware, software, and firmware development methodologies and structured approaches to system development.
  • Experience with aircraft, missile systems, and/or spacecraft
  • Experience with airworthiness requirements development, review, and compliance
  • Experience with electrical and mechanical hardware qualification tests
  • Strong coordination, organization, teaming, and communication abilities
  • Works well individually or in a group setting
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints
  • Successfully presents technical information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with military avionics and sensor networks including 1553 data bus, ARINC-429, Ethernet, and serial interfaces
  • Experience with aviation airworthiness standards including MIL-STD-882, AR385-10, and DO-178
  • Knowledge of or experience with open system architecture such as FACE, HOST, MOSA, and SOSA
  • Experience with system engineering tools (such as SysML, Magic Draw, EA, etc) and configuration/requirements management systems (such as DOORS, JIRA, MKS or ClearCase)
  • Familiarity using scripting languages for data analysis (Perl or Ruby or VBS)
  • Effectively work in small teams of GTRI and government members.
  • Ph.D. in science or engineering is preferred.
  • An active security clearance is preferred.
