Job Description

Research and develop IT solutions to meet the needs of ICL research projects. Work closely with ICL research projects to assess their needs and develop tailored information technology solutions to meet their requirements and provide technical expertise to research projects as needed. This position will interact on a consistent basis with users within the assigned unit, which can include management, faculty and staff personnel. This position typically will advise, counsel, and may supervise student employees. 

Job Duties

  • Provide unit level support in the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of computer systems, networks, and applications. Position typically addresses issues of moderate to difficult complexity, receiving general instructions on routine work and more specific direction on new assignments. This position serves as Tier 2 IT support personnel for more complicated issues and tasks.
  • Research, develop, and maintain secure IT solutions for sensitive project needs including classified and health domain networks.
  • Research, develop, and maintain methods of periodically assessing and protecting ICL secure networks. Support and design systems to ensure compliance with all laws, regulatory compliance, and policies.
  • Design and build secure infrastructure and networks to meet project requirements. Install, maintain and upgrade workstation and peripheral hardware and software. Respond to and resolve workstation, application and server related problems. Maintain and update desktop software/applications and related documentation. Solve networking issues.
  • Write and maintain documentation to facilitate use and support of systems and resources by others. Receive and inventory assets, perform asset tagging, and other tasks supporting the GT Annual Inventory process. Design and maintain A/V solutions to meet project and lab requirements.
  • Enter customer requests as service tickets, and coordinate with other department members to provide the requested services.
  • Coordinate and support ICL datacenter and High-Performance Computing (HPC) activities, including racking and cabling new equipment and updating datacenter maintenance records.
  • Support ICL operations on public and private cloud services such as AWS and Azure.
  • Support ICL public and private container orchestration services such as Kubernetes and Rancher.
  • Provide users with assistance in working with specific server applications in support of sponsored projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Science or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Experience with administering computer systems in a corporate environment (3+ years)

Networking experience

Technical diagnostic experience including problem investigation, reproduction, and resolution skills

Ability to acquire new skills efficiently

Thrives in a collaborative environment

Experience building and maintaining secure networks

Experience with Linux server administration


U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
