Job Description

GTRI’s Co-operative Education (“co-op”) program offers you extensive opportunities to participate in diverse scientific and technological endeavors, use state-of-the-art equipment and rapidly improve your technical and leadership skills. The program allows you to alternate three semesters of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school.

The Robotics and Autonomous Systems Division (RASD) at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is looking for a Software Development Robotics Co-op student who is self-motivated and interested in gaining real world experience to start spring 2020. The student will provide software development, testing, and other support, specifically for research in Swarming, Distributed Multi-Robot Systems, Collaborative Autonomy and Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, along with other GTRI/ATAS projects, as directed by the engineering and software staff. This team primarily develops swarming algorithms for unmanned aircraft, performs software and hardware-in-the-loop testing, research and analysis, and live flight testing. Duties may include software and system testing, development and design, assembly of components/systems, performing experiments, formal creation and follow-up for development issues/bugs, software and system documentation, assisting with field tests/demos, whitepaper creation, and other technical tasks appropriate for the skill level of an engineering/software student.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Robotics/Mechatronics
  • Must have a strong focus or background in software development (REQUIRED regardless of degree pursuing)
  • Must be eligible to be approved by your college/university to participate in a co-op program and register for co-op credit with your university during work terms (First work term begins January 2020)
  • Must be able to complete at least three full-time co-op terms (alternating three terms of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school) prior to graduation
  • Must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in 1 or more programming languages, ideally C++, Python, or C#.
  • Familiarity with Linux and open source tools, ideally Ubuntu.
  • Familiarity with Windows 7 or 10.
  • Experience with version control, ideally with git.
  • Experience with standard build systems, such as CMake, gcc, and/or Visual Studio.
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts.
  • Strong self-motivation and task / team leadership experience.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to your peers.
  • Experience applying software development to real world problems, though student organization teams, competitions, course projects, or personal projects.
  • An appreciation for developing software in an engineering context to drive algorithm and system design for real physical systems, considering safety and human interaction.
  • Interest or familiarity with standard robotics problems and computational solutions.

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
