Job Description

This opportunity is within the Aerospace, Transportation and Advanced Systems Lab (ATAS). ATAS conducts research for government and industry customers in industrial robotics, medical robotics, unmanned systems, aerodynamics, radar and weapons systems, food processing technology, and modeling of social systems. .

We are looking for strong candidates who are self-motivated, have demonstrated C/C++ programming skills, follow software engineering best practices, and a have strong mathematical foundation and problem solving skills.

The GTRI Robotic Systems and Technology Branch is looking for graduates in robotics, computer science, computer/electrical/mechanical engineering, or related fields specializing in robotic planning, control, and software development for agile robotics. You will be joining a growing robotics branch and division, and responsibilities may include research into new and innovative algorithms, rapid prototyping, systems integration, and software engineering with a specific focus on bio/cell-manufacturing applications.

Our branch has an immediate opening for a researcher to perform collaborative research in bio-manufacturing as part of the Georgia Advanced Bio-manufacturing Center. Responsibilities include developing assays for cell and tissue culture to be performed on our bio-manufacturing robotic systems that include Hamilton liquid handling robots and LiConic incubators as well as research into the next generation of agile bio-manufacturing systems.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program relevant to this position will be considered
  • As the position involves the generation of research reports, publications, proposals, and briefs to customers, excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Hands on experience with state-of-the-art algorithms for autonomous robot manipulators or Hamilton equipment is required
  • Experience with biological or medical robotic applications and an understanding of cell culture, assays, and/or bio-processing is required
  • Strong software skills and experience with C++ are required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS)
  • Experience with Python
  • Experience with biological or medical robotic applications
  • An understanding of cell culture, assays, and/or bio-processing
  • Systems integration
  • Proven research experience in at least one of these areas is desirable:
    • Fluid handling robots
    • Robotic arms and/or grasping
    • Multi-robot collaboration
    • Path planning and navigation
    • Behavior based robotics
    • Optimal control and estimation

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
